Stretch and Challenge Question

Tips:
Remember exam technique plan your answer, look at the marks available.
Write structured answers not waffle.
Optical Mark Reader, they detect the pencil markings by reflecting light onto it. Less
light is where the pencil marking has been made. It intercepts the pattern of marks
and the results through the computer storage, analysed and reported. The national
lottery uses this to input large amount of data quickly.
Optical Character Recognition is a scanner used to scan text on a document/ piece of
paper into the computer. It then examines the page and changes the letters into a
form that can be edited or processed by a normal word. Its used to recognise
postcodes on letters at sorting offices.
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition is a technology that allows details from bank
cheques to be read into a computer quickly and accurately. The cheque number
and bank account number are printed at the bottom of each bank cheques in
special magnetic ink using a different font

Laser printers are complex printing devices and very expensive to buy, but cheap to use due to
the fact that they produce marks on the paper using fine dust(a toner) which is cheap to buy
and they can handle large prints. The laser and the toner system allow very fast printing
compared to other printer.
They have so few moving parts they are also cheap to manufacture and cheap to purchase and
the output is high quality but, the output is slow if several copies are needed and the ink is
very expensive to buy so the printers are expensive to use- this is how the printer companies
make profit.
Dot-matrix prints poor quality, the printers are noisy- there are much better printing systems
available today. However, the dot-matrix printers are still used in certain situations: the pins
actually hit the paper, several carbon-copies can be printed in one go so it makes it easier to
print airline tickets which need duplicated pages and they can work in environments where
laser or inkjets cant work.
Laser printers are mainly used in offices because they print very quickly, are cheap to use and
are quite quiet.
