Examples of Failing Welds: Sample #1 (Destructive Testing) : Cold Welds Hot Welds
This document compares cold welds and hot welds and provides examples of failing and passing welds. Cold welds failed at the weld with a small bead radius and little heat discoloration. Hot welds failed where the thickness was very small with extreme heat discoloration. The examples of failing welds showed inconsistent fusion lines and beads that did not adequately fuse the tubes. The examples of passing welds did not fail at the weld and had beads approximately the same thickness as the tubes with moderate heat discoloration and clearly defined fusion lines.

Cold Welds Hot Welds
Failure was as the
weld
Poor fusion of the filler rod / wire to the tubes
Weld bead radius is smaller than tube wall thickness
Little to no heat discoloration
The fitted / coped edges of the tube are visible after separation Failure was at the weld
Weld / tube thickness was very small at point of failure
Weld bead radius is distinctly larger than tube wall thickness
Extreme heat discoloration
