Any well-written paragraph has 3 major components:

*A fact is a statement with which you can only agree. A topic sentence has to contain a clear point of view or an opinion. Unlike facts, opinions are
something you can disagree with. In short, if you can disagree with a statement, then this statement is an acceptable topic sentence.
Explains the main idea of the paragraph.
Features 2 main components: topic + controlling idea.
Is EITHER a sentence with a clear point of view (not a *fact) OR a sentence
that divides the topic into parts.
Topic Sentence
Exaplain or support the topic sentence.
Can be written in the form of: facts, examples or an illustartion based on a
personal experience (a story).
Are divided into major and minor supporting sentences.
Supporting
Sentences (Body)
Is EITHER a restatement of the topic sentence OR a summary of all the
major supporting sentences.
usually starts with a transition.
Concluding
Sentence
International Women's Day is important. This is a good topic sentence because it is an opinion; you can disagree with it by saying that International
Women's Day is not important.
International Women's Day is on March 8. This one does not qualify as a topic sentence because it is a fact; there is no way we can disagree with it.
