Purpose: This assignment is to give you practice in the genre of review as well as multimodal composing and principles of design. Audience: Who is the audience for New York Magazine? More particularly, who would be the audience for your review? Remember I read this magazine, as do many 19 year old. I read some pieces and not othersI am sure that is the same for a 19 year old. Youll need to determine the audience for your review. Ask yourself these questions: Which group of people do you want to inform, persuade, or educate? Which vocabulary, style, or purpose would be appropriate for your intended audience? Which details are important to this audience? Background: New York Magazine is an online magazine that covers our world in many different modes. The text in this magazine is multimodal. The medias that are found in here are not only text based, but commonly visual and audio orientated. Some of these include videos, posters, montages, photo essays, and infographics.
What are you going to do? First, Identify something youd like to review. Youre free to choose anything, but its in your best interest to choose something youre knowledgeable about and care about. Second, Establish the target audience for your review (what are the characteristics of a person who may be interested in your subject? Where and under what circumstances might they seek out a review of your subject?). Third, Establish your and your audiences common expectations (qualities youd expect your subject to have). Fourth, Research your subject to gather background information. You must have 2 outside resources. You will cite them in MLA format. Fifth, Go experience your subject! (dine at the restaurant, play the new video game, listen to the album, try the product, etc.). Make extensive field notes during and after your experience to refer back to while youre composing. Sixth, Compose your multimodal composition! Make this is multimodal. Use a program that allows you to insert text or images in addition to your vlog recording (use iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, or another such program) A 750-1000 word text and image Blog post, like you might see on a newspapers website or blog (use a blog hosting site such as wordpress or blogger) Reflection: Reflection: Your reflection document should be a written text of approximately 500 words.
