The police raided a slum settlement in Varanasi late at night, beating and threatening the residents. They demanded that the area be vacated by 6 am or else they would kill the people and burn down the huts. The police were drunk and brutal, beating men, women, children and the elderly with lathis. They tried to sexually assault women and burned several huts. The residents fled in fear for their lives. The woman recounts that she and her family have lived in the settlement for 5 generations and make a living through menial labor. She wants authorities to provide a safe place for the residents so they are not attacked again.
