This document discusses different types of valves used in oil and gas production, including:
- Gate valves, ball valves, and choke valves which are used on oil wellhead trees from manufacturers like Gray and Cameron.
- Safety valves like subsurface safety valves (SSSV) and surface safety valves (SSSV) from manufacturers like Otis, Barber, and AVA that automatically shut off production from the tubing, wellhead, or flowline.
- Surface controlled subsurface safety valves (SCSSSV) that are either ball valve or flapper types and can be tubing or wireline retrievable.

Valve Types
Gate valves, Ball valves, & Choke valves.
Gate valve: used on oil producer wellhead tree. (2 manufacturers Gray & Cameron). Ball valve: only by Cameron. Choke valve: 2 designs: one like arrow & the other cylinder with holes.
SSV & SSSV & UG: used to automatically shut off the production form (tubing below the surface, or wellhead on surface, or flowline). Different manufacturers: Otis, Barber, and AVA. (some need panel to control old and other new designs are self contained. They can be either tubing retrievable or wireline retrievable VALVE CLOSED SPRING UPPER SEAL HYDRAULIC PORT LOWER SEAL BALL PISTON FLOW TUBE Power Water Injector Ball Valve Oil Producer Gate Valve Wellheads Shown here is the wellhead of an oil producer (note the section with the valves is called the wellhead tree or Christmas tree). TREE WELLHEAD Water Supply This shows a high volume water supply well with an ESP. Only one valve because low pressure and no hydrocarbons present. 12" GATE VALVE B.J. JUNCTION BOX 3" UNIBOLT TREE CAP Wellhead Tree The tree is a series of valves that control flow from the well and allow access to the well Crown valve is used only when doing wireline or coiled tubing work Wing valve controls flow The master valve is last line of defense OTIS QUICK CONNECT TREE CAP CROWN OR SWAB VALVE WING VALVE MASTER VALVE FLOW TEE BONNET CONNECTION BONNET Power Water Injector Option 1: no tubing spool because there is no tubing in some power water injectors. Option 2: with tubing spool (no picture) because they need tubing and packer in the injection well.
