Standard 2

This artifact is a reflection on a course assignment where the student created fictional family scenarios to demonstrate their understanding of the influences on children's development. Through creating the scenarios, the student learned that families come in many forms and face various challenges, both financial and personal, that can impact a child's upbringing. The student also realized the importance of community resources in supporting families and how an educator must work to empower families by connecting them with resources and building respectful relationships, rather than just providing information. Completing this assignment helped widen the student's understanding of family influences, the need for reciprocal educator-family relationships, and how to involve and support families in their child's education.

Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 2. BUILDING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that successful early childhood
education depends upon partnerships with childrens families and communities. They a) know about,
understand and value the importance and complex characteristics of childrens families and communities.
They use their understanding to b) create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower
families, and c) to involve all families in their childrens development and learning. (NAEYC, 2010)
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the spring semester of 2013 during my ECED 204-Families in Transition course, I worked on a
Family Scenarios assignment. The parameters of this assignment were to make up five different fictional
families that had various levels of resources and socioeconomic statuses. Each family was required to have a
preschool age child in it. A description of each family members age, ethnicity, occupation and who their
family support was had to be present in each scenario. After completing the five families, it was required for
the student to choose one family that they made up and to find that family resources in the local community
as well as detail on how to get and keep the family involved in their young childs education.
Analysis of What I Learned:
Through completion of this assignment I found that even though these families were fictional, I found
that they took on a life and personality of their own. I really put myself in the shoes of each family member
that I created and realized how even a seemingly well-off family can be struggling in various ways at home,
which can sometimes reflect in child care and school. I learned that not every family is able to provide the
essentials for their children and that there are multiple interacting influences (ethnicity, socioeconomic status,
availability and access to resources) on childrens overall development that many people dont take into
consideration. I also learned how many resources my community has available to families.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
My completion of this assignment widened my understanding of young childrens characteristics and
needs and what influences them. I learned how many different influences there are on a familys well-being
and how these influences, whether positive or negative, affect a familys involvement in their childrens
education as well as what they are able to provide for their children. In order to create and improve family
involvement, I learned that there needs to be reciprocal relationships between the educator and the parents.
As an educator we need to involve AND empower the families we work with, so that means not spoon-feeding
parents information but rather directing them to available resources within the community. Though these
families were imaginary and though no actual involvement happened, I feel that if I could actually provide
these families with information about local community resources and build relationships with them that they
would become more involved in their childrens development and learning.
