Rapid Prototyping Machine

The document describes an experiment using a Rapid Prototyping Machine (RPM) to print an "OM" symbol. It explains that the RPM takes instructions from CAD software to convert models into printable formats. It details how the software analyzes different part orientations and estimates printing times. For the "OM" symbol, orientation (b) was chosen since it had a much shorter estimated print time of 5 minutes compared to 50 minutes for orientation (a). Once printed, the extra filler material was removed by dipping the part in water. The conclusions state that RPMs allow complex shapes to be easily produced from CAD drawings and can be used to print individual parts or whole assemblies with good surface finish.

Rapid Prototyping Machine

Aim: The aim of this experiment is to study how a RPM (Rapid Prototyping Machine) works.
Apparatus: RPM (Rapid Prototyping Machine) FORTUS 360 mc
Printing Material: ABS M30

Procedure:
1. Instructions to RPM (Rapid Prototyping Machine) are given through a software program
from a computer.
2. The CAD model is first converted to STL (stereolithography) format, which is the standard
format of a drawing that can imported.
3. Next we have to decide the alignment of the model. The software outputs the machining
time and amount of filler material required for each alignment.
4. The product we are to produce in this experiment is OM symbol.

(a)

(b)

Alignment (a) has a machining time of approximately 50 minutes whereas alignment (b) has a
machining time of just 5 minutes.
5. This is because of the high base area. This provides high stability while printing layer-bylayer. The amount of filler material required is also reduced.
6. So the alignment (b) is chosen and command is given to print the model.
7. The filler material is removed by dipping the model in water.
Conclusions:
It is a software-based machine. Every command is given in the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the
software.
Complex shapes can be produced without effort using this machine. All you need is a CAD drawing of
the product. This can be used not only for producing individual parts , but also for producing whole
assembly. The products would be of better surface finish (mostly there wouldnt be any need of
further surface finishing to be done).
