Hall Effect: AIM: To Determine The Hall Coefficient, Hall Voltage and Charge Carrier Density of A Semiconductor Crystal

This document provides steps to determine the Hall coefficient, Hall voltage, and charge carrier density of a semiconductor crystal using a Hall effect experiment. The experiment involves placing a semiconductor between the poles of an electromagnet, passing a current through it, and measuring the resulting Hall voltage to calculate the mentioned values. Key steps include setting up the Gauss meter and power supply, placing the semiconductor probe in the magnetic field, connecting leads and taking voltage readings while varying the current.

HALL EFFECT

AIM: To determine the Hall coefficient,

Hall Voltage and charge carrier density
of a semiconductor crystal.

STEP 1:

Switch on the Gauss meter

and Set the Gauss meter to
zero by adjusting the zero
adjusting knob

STEP 2:

On the constant power supply

below the Gauss meter adjust
the knob & set it to either 3
amp (or) 4 amp (or) 5 amp

STEP 3:

Hall Probe is connected to the

backside of the Gauss meter and
should be placed between the
Electromagnets poles

Rotate the Hall

Probe between the
Electromagnets
poles, till the gauss
meter reading
should show the
maximum value.

Note down the

value after
multiplying it with
10, since the knob
shown reads X 10.

Now remove the Hall Probe.

Switch off the Gauss meter.

PHASE 2

Probe containing Semiconductor

Crystal

This is the
semiconductor
mounted on the PCB.

STEP 4:

Place the given semiconductor

between pole piece of magnet

STEP 5:

Switch on the Hall-effect

set-up and connect the leads
as shown.

Set the knob in current mode and

vary the current.

The set the knob to voltage mode and get the Hall
voltage reading.
Carry out step 6 and note down readings.

Hall Voltage readings.

Note down the readings in the
tabular column

If an electric current flows through a

conductor in a magnetic field, the magnetic
field exerts a transverse force on the moving
charge carriers which tends to push them to
one side of the conductor.
