Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): List skills/abilities students will need to

successfully participate in
their learning experience according to the following developmental needs: social,
cognitive, physical, and emotional.
Previously, students have learned to recognize natural features of their
physical environment (K-1.4). Students have learned to identify natural resources
(1-1.3) and compare how land and natural resources are used throughout the world
(1-1.4). Students have learned to recognize geographic features and natural
resources of the local region (2-1.2) as well as how individuals use the land to make
a living (2-1.4).
Students also have experience in taking notes from previous lessons. The
expectation has been set for their Social Studies Notebooks for note-taking and
organization.

Procedures:
1. The teacher will begin the lesson with a review of geographical questions
about the state. (How many regions? What geographic features border SC?
etc.)

3. Students will take notes on characteristics of the Piedmont region in their
notebooks.
4. Students will take notes on the Sandhills region.

of South Carolina Book. They will color the first, second and third pages and
list the characteristics of the Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Sandhills regions. The
teacher will use specific instructions while coloring these pages.

its own color. This color coding will continue throughout the unit.
8. At the conclusion of the lesson, students will complete an exit slip on what
they have learned so far about the regions of SC.

and completion. A daily grade will be given.

Activity Analysis: (should show use of TWS 1 data)

Identify at least two activities you plan to use in this lesson and explain why you are
planning these specific activities.
In your explanation include the following prompts:
The review will hold the students accountable for retaining prior knowledge.
Note-taking is a basic skill that will be used throughout their school careers
and the activity book will allow for social interaction among students. The exit
slip will be collected as a formative assessment of gained knowledge of all
students.
All students will benefit from the lesson planned. There will be visual aids, a
song, and direct instruction to ensure the success of all learners.
The Smart Board will be used to display the song from YouTube by Detective
Bonz. The notes will be displayed on the Smart Board as well.

Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increases in Rigor
(should show use of TWS 1 data)
Students with vision impairments will have the opportunity to sit closer to the
board. Proximity will be used to keep students who have difficulty paying attention
on task. An appropriate amount of time will be given for students to take notes in
their notebooks. Visual learners will benefit from the color coding of each region.
Auditory learners will benefit from direct instruction and the integrated song.
Kinesthetic learners will benefit from the creation of the regions book.
