CONCEPTUAL PHYSICS
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The objective of the 9th Grade Conceptual Physics course is to introduce students to the
physical sciences. The course emphasizes topics in introductory Physics and aims to
cultivate basic science skills including proper use of the scientific method, laboratory
techniques and laboratory reporting.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:
1. Be on time. 3 instances of tardiness to class will result in detention.
2. Be prepared. Every student must arrive to each class with:
o Writing utensils - pencils and/or pens
o Spiral notebook
o 3-ring binder, including pocket folder
o Calculator
3. Pay attention.
o Talking when the teacher or another student is speaking will not be tolerated.
o Absolutely NO CELL PHONE USE in the classroom. (See Attleboro High School
Cell Phone Policy)
o Be prepared to take notes no matter what format our class takes.
4. Be respectful.
o Respect classroom materials, classmates, the teacher.
o This classroom has a 0 TOLERANCE policy for disrespect.
Consequences will be administered at the discretion of the teacher.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
1. Immediately upon entering the classroom:
o Take out your completed homework.
(Homework will be checked/collected the day after it is assigned. Late homework will not
be accepted.)
o Check the lab tables at the back of the classroom for any new handouts.
o Check the board for any bell work and begin the assignment.
2. Binder/notebook checks: Will be performed frequently with or without notice.

o It is important for students to keep each handout, assignment, quiz, test


and lab activity in the binder.
o This handout should be kept at the front of the three-ring binder at all
times for reference.
Answering questions in class: Please raise your hand. Answers that are called out
will not be accepted.
Asking questions in class: If you have a question during instruction or during class
work, please do not hesitate to raise your hand and ask.
Using classroom materials:
o Materials that are available for general use are located on the lab tables at
the back of the room.
o You may access these materials at any point during class WHEN I AM
NOT ADDRESSING THE CLASS.
o Extra writing utensils are available for unprepared students; however,
students must be prepared to give me some sort of collateral (preferably a
cell phone) for access to a writing utensil.
o Materials located on my desk are OFF LIMITS to students.
Leaving the classroom: Students will not be permitted to leave the classroom
during instruction (unless in an emergency). Students who need to use the restroom
or visit the nurse (at an appropriate time) may leave the classroom upon signing out
on the clipboard located at the front of the classroom and taking a pass.
Being late to class: Students who are tardy to class must sign the "Late Board"
located at the front of the classroom.
At the end of class: Students must remain seated until the bell rings. I reserve the
right to detain the entire class until all students are seated.

MAKEUP POLICY:
1. Missed work: Students who are absent from school must pick up missed
assignments from the "While You Were Out" bin located in the back of the
classroom. Students will have two school days for each day absent to make up
missed school work.
2. Making up tests/quizzes: Students absent the day before a test will be expected to
take the test on test day. Students absent the day of the test will be expected to take
the test within two days of their return.
3. Late work: 1 day late - 25% point reduction
2 or more days late - 50% point reduction

GRADING:
40% Tests and Quizzes
30% Classwork
20% Labs and Projects
10% Homework
I employ a 0 TOLERANCE cheating/plagiarism policy. Cheating on tests/quizzes and
plagiarism of any written work will result in an irrevocable zero on the assignment.
EXTRA HELP:
A key to your success is being aware of when you don't fully understand what's being
discussed in class. See me when you're feeling shaky! I am available after school most
