Study Notes 2

The document discusses three types of transformations in geometry: rotations, reflections, and translations. Rotations turn a shape around a central point, reflections flip a shape across a line, and translations slide a shape to a new position without changing its orientation or size. The document also defines surface area as the total area of all faces of a 3D shape and volume as the space occupied by the shape. It provides an example of calculating the surface area and volume of a 5cm cube.

Transformation Geometry

Transformation geometry looks at how shapes can

be changed or moved.
The 3 types of transformation are
1) Rotation 2) Reflection 3) Translation

1) Rotation
Rotation is when a shape is turned around a point.
This point is called the Centre of Rotation.
Only the position of the shape changes, not the size.
Rotation can be clockwise or anti-clockwise.
When describing a Rotation, identify the position of the
Centre of Rotation and show the direction of the Rotation.

Rotation

2) Reflection
Reflection is when a shape is reflected across a line.
This line is called the Line of Reflection.
A Reflection can also be called a Flip.
The shape and reflection are congruent and face opposite ways.
The Line of Reflection can be in any direction.
The shape and the reflection are the same distance from the
Line of Reflection.

Reflection
3) Translation
Translation is when a shape slides into a new position.
All parts of the shape will move in the same direction.
All parts of the shape will move the same distance.
The size of the shape stays the same.
In Translation the shape can slide left, right, up, down and diagonally.

SURFACE AREA AND VOLUME OF 3D SHAPES.

A PRISM is a 3D shape. It has length, breadth and height.

A NET is the pattern you would use to form a 3D shape.
A CUBE has 6 faces.
The SURFACE AREA of a 3D shape is the sum total of
the area of all the faces.
VOLUME of a 3D shape is the space occupied by the prism.
CAPACITY of a 3D shape is the space inside a prism.
Calculate the Surface area and the Volume of a 5cm Cube.
Area of one face
= 5 x 5 = 25 cm
The cube has 6 faces = 6 x 25 = 150 cm
The Surface Area is 150 cm.

L=5cm

H=5cm

The Volume is calculated by multiplying

the length by the breadth by the height.

B=5cm

Therefore the Volume = 5 x 5 x 5 = 125 cm.
