Topic 3: Electric Field Lines and Electric Dipoles: August 13, 2014 (Wednesday)

This document discusses electric field lines and electric dipoles. It defines electric field lines as a graphical representation of electric fields in space, with characteristics such as the electric field being tangent to the lines and spacing inversely proportional to field strength. Rules for drawing electric field lines are provided, such as no intersections and lines originating from positive charges and ending at negative charges. Examples are given of sketching electric field lines for different charge configurations and identifying strong and weak field regions.

TOPIC 3: ELECTRIC

FIELD LINES AND

ELECTRIC DIPOLES
August 13, 2014 (Wednesday)

Objectives

Given the electric field lines, deduce the

electric field vectors and the nature of electric
field sources.

Discuss the motion of the electric dipole in a

uniform electric field.

ELECTRIC FIELD LINES

Electric Field Lines

A graphical representation of the electric

fields in the space.
Characteristics of Electric Field Lines:
The

electric field is tangent to the electric field

lines.
The spacing of the electric field lines is
inversely proportional to the strength of the
electric field in that region.

Rules in Drawing
Electric Field Lines

No field line intersection.

Field line must begin from the positive
charge and end to the negative charge.
The number of field lines, arising from, or
emerging to, is proportional to the magnitude
of charge.
At the region very far away from the system
of charges, that system must look like a
single charged particle.

Example 1: Sketch the Line

Draw the electric field lines for the following
system of charges:
1. A single +q charge
2. A system with +q and q charges
3. A system with two +q charges
4. A system with +q and 2q charges

Example 2: Identity
Identify the region in the space where the
electric field is strong and weak.
1. A single +q charge
2. A system with +q and q charges
3. A system with two +q charges
4. A system with +q and 2q charges
