Riverside Police and District 96 School staff partnered to conduct a safety lockdown drill at all schools in Riverside. The drill was designed to test the schools' emergency action plans for responding to an intruder incident. Assistant Principal Stacy Westin said the teachers and staff followed their crisis management training and would debrief to identify any areas for improvement. Police Chief Thomas Weitzel was pleased with the involvement of officers and how the school implemented its plan. Sgt. Leo Kotor observed as school staff properly conducted a lockdown drill and checked classrooms. The school district continues working closely with police on student and staff safety.

in a Lockdown Drill
All schools in Riverside take part
Riverside Police and Riverside District 96 School staff partnered for a safety
lockdown drill. The drill was held on Thursday, November 13, 2014. As part of
ongoing emergency action plan, the drill is designed for prevention, preparedness,
response and recovery from an intruder incident. At no time were any students or
staff in immediate danger.

"The safety of our students is our number one concern. Our teachers and staff
followed the crisis management plan step by step just as they have been trained to
do. At this point we will debrief with the faculty and the emergency agencies involved
and assess what went smoothly and to identify any areas we need to
improve. Overall, the drill went very well."

teachers, and our officers are of paramount importance. How we react to a crisis will
determine the overall success dealing with any crisis."

In the drill, we had police personnel observe as school personnel conducted a lock
down/ intruder exercise and checked rooms for proper procedures, said Sgt. Leo
Kotor.
The school district is continuing to work closely with the Riverside Police
Department on all issues related to the safety of students and staff.
