Unit Plan 2 Trig Graphs

This unit plan outlines a 3 week (8 day) trigonometry unit focusing on graphing trigonometric functions using sine and cosine. Students will graph trig functions by hand and with calculators, explore the characteristics of sine, cosine and tangent functions, and learn to write equations of trig functions based on their graphs or descriptions. Key concepts covered include amplitude, period, and the even and odd properties of trig functions. Students will graph functions using shifts and stretches, write equations from graphs, and identify period and amplitude. Assessment includes quizzes on graphing and writing equations from graphs, as well as a test on graphing, describing, and writing equations for sine and cosine functions.

Unit Plan 2: Graphing Trig

3 weeks (8 days?)
MA: Funct., Trigonometric Functions
F-TF Extend the domain of trigonometric
functions using the unit circle.
4. (+) Use the unit circle to explain symmetry
(odd and even) and periodicity of
trigonometric functions.
F-TF Model periodic phenomena with
trigonometric functions.
5. Choose trigonometric functions to
model periodic phenomena with specified
amplitude, frequency, and midline.

Create graphs of trig functions by hand.

Utilize the calculator and other strategic tools
to graph and verify functions.
The characteristics of sine, cosine and
tangent functions
Writing the equation of a trig function based
on its graph or description
Using an equation to graph and describe the
function
Determining if a function is even or odd

Key Terms:
Amplitude: half the distance from the max and min, distance from the midline to the max/min
Period: the length of one complete wave, the horizontal distance until the graph repeats
Even/odd: even f(-x)=f(x), odd f(-x)=-f(x) (observe symmetry given this definition)

Day 1
Human ferris wheel track one persons height above ground, what will the graph look like?
Plot sine values (- to 2), Plot cosine values (- to 2), make observations (patterns questions)
You need your graphing calculator next class!!

Day 2 (Tina was at NWMC)

Sine graph exploration packet **edit to be y=asin(b(x+c))+d**

Day 3
Discuss patterns in sine and cosine (HW from day 1)
*Should include even/odd here*

Day 4
Discuss sine graph exploration

Define Amplitude, Period, Shifts/Stretches

Graph using variable substitution and transformations - N=sin(M) *use better letters, f and g? like f(x)*

Day 5
Graph given equations with shifts and stretches

Day 6
Quiz: Graph sine/cosine, identify period and amplitude
Write equation from a graph
to use N=sin(M) method your y value pattern must match sine or cosine!
Find amplitude and period from graph, use combo of table and a/b/c/d
Goal of shifts is to get back to zero.

Day 7 (Monday)
DDM writing equation from graph, compare/contrast
Ferris wheel (various contexts)

Day 8
Answer questions on ferris wheel
(half the class was absent last class so we just got caught up)

Day 9
Write equation given graph
Next time: Quiz: Write an equation given graph, one characteristic

Day 10
Write equation given description
Review

Day 11
Test on graph/description/equation for sine/cosine
Packet on tangent/secant (Next time just do the tangent page)

Day 12 (short day)

Discuss test and packet

Day 13
Breeze through secant etc.
Even/odd (function definition, symmetry)
Inverse
