PERSONAL AIR MONITORING

We need to measure the exposure concentration for the evaluation of the exposure level to
workers at motor vehicle repair. Personal sampling pump or personal dust samplers are used to
conduct both total and respirable dust sampling. This instrument will monitor at the breathing
zone area.
1) Total Dust Sampling
Total dust sampling is performed by removing the plugs from the ports on the sampling
cassettes to the air sampling equipment. Based on the NIOSH Manual Analytical Method for
total dust, NIOSH 0500 recommends sampling rates of 1 to 2 liters per minute (Lpm) for a
maximum of 133 liters.
2) Respirable Dust Sampling
When respirable dust (10 microns or less) is being collected to evaluate, we will need to use a
cyclone. This is a sampling device that excludes dust particles larger than the respirable size.
Depending on the type of cyclone used, a two-or three-piece cassette may be needed. Based on
the NIOSH Manual Analytical Method for respirable dust, NIOSH 0600 recommends sampling
rates of 1.7 Lpm or 2.2 Lpm (depending on the type of cyclone used), for a maximum of 400
liters.
Threshold Limit Value (TLV)

To calculate TLV's for total dust, the following equation will be used:
TLV
total dust

30 mg/m3
% quartz + 3

The following equation will be used to calculate TLV's for respirable dust:
TLV
respirable
dust

10mg/m3
= % respirable quartz

ENVIRONMENT OR AREA AIR MONITORING

We need to measures the environmental concentration for the evaluation of the clean
level in the motor vehicle repair. Dustmate is used to conduct area sampling. This instrument
will monitor outside the breathing zone area of the workers. It will be carried out to determine
whether dust levels at every part of areas are kept below the approved limits and to protect the
long term health of motor vehicle repair workers. The reading of this instrument is taken directly
after workers finish their job. This instrument is being placed at the center of the area of those
activities.
