Sns Basin PP

The Southern North Sea Basin lies between England and the Netherlands. It has produced over 43 trillion cubic feet of natural gas from 123 gas fields. Exploration began in the 1960s with the discovery of the large Groningen gas field. The basin formed from the collision and rifting of tectonic plates during the Caledonian and Variscan orogenies. Key petroleum systems include Carboniferous coal source rocks and Permian reservoir sands sealed by salt deposits. Despite past production, the basin remains underexplored and holds potential for further hydrocarbon discoveries.

Tectonic Setting
The North Sea was the site of a triple plate collision zone during
the Caledonian orogeny
The extension of Caledonian Orogeny initiated the rift basins
Early Devonian saw extensional tectonic regime forming a series
of graben
Variscan Orogeny compression cause the inversion and erosion
Rifiting reactivated in Triassic Jurassic
The inversion and erosion in Cretaceous Teritary resulted in
thining and onlap of the Chalk

Evolution of Basin
Early Permian, NW Europe is a hot, barren
landscape
Ephemeral lakes become saline
Dessert sand forms preserved the
Carboniferous fern forests
Salt prcipitation formed as sea become
saline
Land emerged in Middle Jurassic and sand
deposited along the coast
Upper Jurassic, North Sea below sea level
became rift zone
Mudstone with algae content deposited
followed by sand
End Cretaceous white chalk deposited
Erosional material deposited in North Sea
Subsidence cause SR to depth forming
