Dear Parents:
Through my office, the School District is supporting a group of teachers who are working on improving
how we communicate student learning through a process that supports the 21 st Century learning in their
classrooms. The guiding principle for the committee was simply to provide parents with a better way of
understanding where their children are in their learning journey.
The portfolio-based reporting we are using is very different from the report cards that you have seen in
the past. We know from research that ongoing descriptive feedback along with student self assessment
helps greatly in the understanding of student progress. It is our hope that different will mean that
both you and your child will have a clearer picture of their progress. You will be receiving regular
ongoing snapshots of learning as well as summaries stating how your child is doing in relation to grade
level expectations.
Attached to this letter are instructions for you to access your childs portfolio. If you have questions
please feel free to contact me or the classroom teacher.
Yours truly,

Welcome to Portfolios
for Division 2

how that work is marked by the teacher.

a report card as well as portfolios for term 1 but our
intention is to move to a more continuous reporting
structure with only portfolios going forward.

Q. How do I access the portfolio for my child?

Q. Why are we using portfolios?
A. Ms. Roberts and Mr. Schilling are looking to
provide a more authentic process for showing your
childs learning journey and show you what is being
covered in class.

A. You can access the portfolio for your child by

entering their computer login at the following
website: https://portal.sd71.bc.ca/my

samples and assessments (rubrics and marks) to the
portfolios. You can see real examples of what we
