Honors 100
Assignment 1: Who are you?

While applying for colleges, I was conflicted between whether I wanted the large public school
experience or the small and interdisciplinary liberal arts experience. I chose the University of
Washington Honors Program because it allowed me to combine these two experiences. At UW I am able
to utilize the resources of a large resource university and with the Honors Program I can experience
small, interdisciplinary and academically rigorous courses.
On my personal path to the University of Washington, I challenged myself in high school by
enrolling in several AP and honors classes as well as joining my schools biotech academy. Looking back
though, I am disappointed that I never really participated in any clubs in high school; however I did have
numerous extracurricular activities including a volunteer job at the Wing Luke Asian museum in Seattles
International district. This experience is what inspired me to enroll in AAS 385 (Asian and Pacific Islander
Race, Law and Justice) at UW and a separate internship at the Honolulu First Circuit Court in Hawaii
sparked an interest in the field of law for me.
As I have met many new people at University of Washington, the question what is your
intended major? has been asked more times than I count. However, my answer is never consistent.
Sometimes I say I want to double major in computer science and pre-law, but other times Ill throw in
chemistry or some other subject. Honestly I still have no idea what I want to major in because I just
havent discovered what I am passionate about. In high school, I thrived in my chemistry, calculus and
genetics classes, but in college, I want to explore computer science and pre-law because they appear to
be some of the most practical for future employment. I will continue to explore disciplines for a few
quarters because I want to find those one or two areas of knowledge where I am passionate and where I
also know I can find employment after college.
One resource that I intend to use at the University of Washington is the study abroad program.
This summer I visited family in Germany and travelled all over the country by both car and train. I had
such an excellent experience that I want to explore the possibility of studying abroad there. However
the biggest issue that I would experience is the language barrier, because I dont speak any German right
now. I have attempted to solve this issue by taking initiative and enrolling in the German 101 class at
UW.
By the end of this year, I plan on taking a few honors classes so that I can continue to explore
the different academic disciplines at UW. I also plan to meet with my honors advisor so that I can
definitively plan out my academic year and see what resources are available that I havent been using. I
would also want my advisor to help me find an internship for this year or for the summer. I also plan to
continue to take German classes so that I can be fluent enough to study abroad by junior year.
