Second Grade Scoop

Reading

The comprehension focus will be to identify what


the author wants to answer, explain, or describe in
the text. (P.I.E. = persuade, inform, entertain)
We will also describe how characters in a story

Math (test Wednesday)
Wednesday we will test over adding within 100
to solve problems using mental math. Starting
Thursday, we will introduce subtraction within
100 to solve problems using mental math.

Vocabulary
Students will learn the meanings of root words.
We will then see how the meaning changes by
adding a prefix.
disapprove = not + approve

Spelling (Test Friday)


Spelling words focus on /er/ /ur/ sounds.
(after, camper, shower, over, mother, father,
hurt, burn, turn, furry, hurry, person, every,
sister, were)

disagree = not + agree


dissatisfied = not + satisfied
impolite = not + polite
imperfect = not + perfect
input = put + into

Homework

prepay = pay + before

Language
Proper use of plural nouns, both regular and
irregular, will be taught as well as how to use
linking verbs. We will also learn how to
construct a paragraph.

Phonics
We will continue to practice reading words with
Bossy R, /er/ /ur/. Also, the prefixes dis-(not),
pre-(before), in-(not, into) im-(not) will be
introduced.

Monday Red homework folder sent home.


Tuesday Read 15 minutes from library book

Thursday leveled reader (parent signs log);
Study for the spelling test tomorrow.
Friday Spelling test; homework folder due
