Humanistic Psychology - Carl Rogers

This document summarizes key concepts from humanistic psychology theorists Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. It discusses Maslow's hierarchy of needs and the barriers to meeting self-actualization needs, then focuses on Rogers' idea of "conditions of worth" where people experience approval as conditional rather than unconditional. Rogers' client-centered therapy aims to provide unconditional positive regard to relax defenses and allow one's true self to emerge through a process of self-actualization.

Conditions of Worth

Conditions of Worth

If

You try to construct an image of yourself in

your and others minds congruent with
conditions of worth

need to meet external and internalized

expectations or conditions of worth to feel
worthy

So you deny, distort, rationalize (selfprotective attributions), self-handicap, and

on and on
even if it makes you less fully functioning or
self-actualizing

Then
Motivation or locus of causality becomes
external to self
Feel pressured, not self-determining

Information becomes evaluation

Feel defensive, not open

Rogerian Therapy

How does it work?

Nondirective / Client-centered / Person-centered

Technique = reflective / empathic listening

If the understanding and love you received

from others was conditional

Restate Content
Clarify Feelings

Active Ingredient = way of being which communicates

Empathy
Unconditional Positive Regard
Genuineness / Congruence

You learned to perceive & evaluate yourself

based on these conditions of worth

If the understanding and love from others

any othersis unconditional
You weaken those conditions of worth
Your defenses relax

feelings awareness expression

I am open with you the way I am open with myself

As you relax

And what is your true self?

More open to

That fully functioning, self-actualizing

person (described in the previous lesson)

others
feedback from the world
yourself

Complex, changing, fully open to and

embracing of
Oneself
Others
And the process of living

More open to experiences that are

confusing, complex, uncertain and
more complete, accurate, & actualizing

More Personal Power

To be that self which I truly am
