OVERVIEW
The house is designed using I C Fs (insulated concrete forms) for the first and second
floor walls and a slab first floor. The interior perimeter will have a wood 2x4 wall and bat
insulation for additional overall wall R-value. Windows are low E grade. The roof will be
trusses and metal roof. ICFs have become very popular in the last few years in energy
efficient building practices.
Dwelling
The dwelling is concrete Construction of first and Second floor walls. Stick Built interior walls and roof
The dwelling is a total of 4,102 SQ.FT.

The dwelling will sit on a concrete foundation, beginning at 4 feet deep. One foot
of a mix of #5 and #7 gravel packed firm. Then a foundation pour of three feet deep and
two feet wide. The first floor will be a concrete slab four inches thick. The walls are I F
C construction with 2x4 insulated interior walls this will give a high R-value wall for a
very energy efficient home. The exterior of the dwelling will be vinyl siding. The roof
will be constructed of trusses and sheeting with a metal roof. The underside of the
sheeting will be foam insulated and blow in insulation equaling R-50 in the attic for
energy efficiency.
The heating and air conditioning system is two (first and second floor) Trane gas
furnace with a heat pump. It has two ton cooling capacity 24,000 btu/hr and 58,000
btu/hr heating capacity. The entire house calculated to a 55,298 btu/hr heating load and
a 19,321 btu/hr cooling load. With the large wall thickness and many layers of
insulation the dwelling is very energy efficient. The number of occupants and
appliances in this unit would calculate out as a commercial building not residential only
because of the green construction techniques used was I able to use equipment that are
primarily residential units.

Floor plan Layout

The floor plan I chose is an open style that can maximize the use of the square footage
available. There is 7 bedrooms and no waiting with 5 baths, a large kitchen area. Each
bedroom has two bunk beds to accommodate four people to a room, allowing up to 28
people to live in the dwelling. There are large common areas both down stairs and
upstairs for studying or relaxing. My approach to the house was to give as large a living
area for everyone. The bedrooms should be large enough to accommodate a desk and
wardrobe for each person living there.

Conclusion
In this project I have found many new green items for the interior of the home, but not
many new ones that I was not aware of for the construction process. One can be tempted
to begin looking to alternative power sources such as wind or solar power however these
are still expensive to the average person and not cost effective for most construction
projects or lack convenience that will cause most people to opt out. I chose not to use a
geo-thermal unit in this house because of the cost. A geo unit would cost more and would
not pay for itself as quickly as a conventional split system heat pump. In my opinion the
best solution to build green is to construct as tight an envelope as possible. Install
adequate amount of insulation and invest in appliances that are energy and water saving.
