WHAT I CAN PROMISE

I can always find time to provide extra help when you need it this year. In addition to tutorial after school, I can meet
before school or even during lunch. We can read and discuss your writing together, continue a conversation from class, or
talk about something important to you. Please let me know in advance when you plan to visit; I want to make sure I am
prepared to help you.

Snapshot of the class

Daily schedule
On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we will engage in Writers Workshop: we will study the moves of real authors and try
to mimic their patterns in our own writing. We will write to inform, persuade, reflect, evaluate, and explore. You will have
choice. You will behave like a real writer. If you would like to bring a laptop to class on these days, I highly encourage
it. You may also work on paper or with a school computer. On Tuesday and Thursday, we will study literature. On these
days, you must bring your SSR (self-selected read) to class as well as the whole-class text.

Read like a wolf eats. Gary Paulsen

Twenty minutes of sustained reading of a self-selected book is expected at home Monday through
Thursday. Read what you love while remaining open to new titles and genres.

Edmodo is a social learning network for teachers, students, and parents. In this class, assignments, important documents,
and some discussions will occur or be posted on Edmodo. Please note: Edmodo is a communication tool: you can use it to
communicate about course content with your peers and me. It is not meant for sharing personal information. Please refer to
the school policy on Internet use for standards of conduct. Further instructions for gaining access to Edmodo will be
provided during the first week.

Were Late, were late, for a very important date. White Rabbit
Each quarter, you will earn a Timeliness grade, which will be recorded separately from any assignment. I will keep track
of late assignments, and at the end of the quarter, your Timeliness grade will reflect one of four levels of timeliness:
Advanced Mastery=100 (Assignments are always submitted on time); Mastery=90 (Assignments are, with a few
exceptions, submitted on time); Initial Mastery=80 (Assignments are generally submitted on time); No Mastery=75
(Assignments are almost always submitted late).

Google Docs is a free, Web-based word processor (among other things). It allows users to create and edit documents
online while collaborating in real-time with other uses. We will utilize Google Docs frequently. For example, you will
submit drafts and final drafts of your writing through Google Docs; I will also provide feedback using this tool. In order
to take full advantage of Google Docs, you must have a Gmail account. For more information, refer to the handout
How to Create a Gmail Account disseminated in the first week. Please see me with any concerns.

half of my life is an act of revision. John Irving

Grades will be calculated on a total points system with each assignment equaling a different number of points. Assessments
will include annotation, dialectical journals, essays, projects, discourse, and quizzes. (Note: Test days are Tuesday and
Friday.) Furthermore, you are invited to resubmit a piece of writing until you are completely satisfied with it. In the past,
my students have admitted to feeling more in control of their learning when given the opportunity to revise something until
it meets the standard. Many have said that they are appreciative of the opportunity for unlimited success. They are more
comfortable making mistakes and taking risks because they know the process will continue. You will earn a grade on your
best draft.
