Point Slope Form

This document provides examples for writing linear equations in point-slope and slope-intercept form given different inputs like the slope and a point, or two points. It shows how to write the equation in point-slope form first, then algebraically manipulate it to get the slope-intercept form. Examples are provided for writing equations when given the slope and a point, as well as using two points to first calculate the slope and then write the equation. Step-by-step workings are demonstrated and confirmed with "Check It Out!" examples.

Example 3: Writing Linear Equations in SlopeIntercept Form

Write an equation in slope-intercept form for
the line with slope 3 that contains (1, 4).

Step 1 Write the equation in point-slope form:

y y1 = m(x x1)
y 4 = 3[x (1)]
Step 2 Write the equation in slope-intercept form by
solving for y.
Rewrite subtraction of negative
y 4 = 3(x + 1)
numbers as addition.
y 4 = 3x + 3 Distribute 3 on the right side.
