Critical Thinking-Reflection
As soon as the school year started, I wanted to make sure I contributed to
making my classroom welcoming and positive for my students. Even though the classroom was not technically mine, I still wanted to ensure students felt safe and respected while they were learning. This is where they are spending a majority of their day, so I believe it is essential to build a relationship with them on a personal level, as well as an educational level. In the early stages of student teaching, I explained to my students that I had a zero tolerance policy for bullying and disrespect. There have been so many instances where I have witnessed students approaching teachers trying to explain an incident that occurred with another student, but get brushed away as tattle tales. However, I believe that students have the right to be heard. If a situation is ignored or brushed off, students will believe that those behaviors are acceptable in the classroom, and will continue to occur. To build respect and rapport in my classroom, I give my students many opportunities to share their life experiences with the class. All of my students know that if one of their classmates is in front of the class speaking, or speaking from their seat, that they need to give that student respect through actively listening. I greet each and every student in the morning, so it starts their day off on a positive note. My students are often encouraged to work in groups, so they can also build meaningful relationships with each other as well. Students are aware that their work is valued, because it is displayed throughout the classroom. During the first week of school, students completed an All About Me activity where they had to draw themselves and write three things inside their drawing that described their unique personality. Building respect and rapport with students is a number one priority of mine. As an educator, it is my responsibility to ensure my students feel comfortable, respected and safe in their learning environment each and every day. It is vital for them to know that they are a part of a team, and that their personal contributions matter!!
