Money
The Chinese invented paper and painting. Then they invented paper
money. Before coins and paper money, people used to trade for things they
needed. As time passed, people begin to use shells, jewels, or tea leaves in
the same way we use money now. People use about 140 kinds of money
today.
Records
In the past, when people wanted to listen to singers and musicians, they
had to do it in person. They didnt have any way to keep the music they
heard. Then in 1877, Thomas Edison recorded human speech for the first
time. For many years, people used to play records made of plastic on
gramophones. Today we listen to music on tapes, CDs and on computers.
Plasters
Before Earle Dickson invented the Band- Aid in 1920, people had different
ways to stop bleeding and protect a wound. They used to chew up leaves
and put them in the wound, put in spider webs, or pack the cut with
sawdust. Today, we all have a box of sticking plasters at home.
Umbrellas
The first umbrellas were for shade from the sun, not for rain. Around
3,500 years ago, people used to make them from palm leaves, feathers or
paper. Later, women in ancient Rome put oil on the paper to keep rain
from coming through. Now everyones got an umbrella of cloth or plastic
for rainy days
