Computing Curriculum Map 2014

This document outlines the computing curriculum map for key stages 1 and 2. It shows that in key stage 1, students will learn about e-safety, using different software and devices, and basic algorithms. In lower key stage 2, the focus is on programming, the internet, computer networks, and developing digital literacy. Upper key stage 2 expands on programming and debugging skills, looks more closely at computer hardware and networks, and teaches HTML and digital presentation skills. E-safety is promoted throughout the key stages.

Computing Curriculum 2014 Provision Map.

Key Stage 1
Autumn Term
What is technology?

Year 1

How to keep safe on the

computer (e-safety)
Children to begin to understand
what a computer is.
Can they log on, find software
to support learning?
Identify what technology
children have at home (crosscurricular)

Year 2

How to use IT:

Pictures
Software
Pictures
(iPads encouraged)
(Computing also ensures that
pupils become digitally literate
able to use, and express
themselves and develop their
ideas through, information and
communication technology)
Fluent users

How to use IT:

Software
Pictures
Internet
Audio
E-safety will be promoted throughout
(Computing also ensures that pupils
become digitally literate able to use, and
express themselves and develop their ideas
through, information and communication
technology)

Keeping safe on the computer

How computers are used outside of school
-Employment etc.

Spring Term
How computers
are used around
the school
environment

Recognise
common uses
of information
technology
beyond school

Summer Term
Algorithms: linking outside use of IT
Begin to understand
Active participation
Can the children create and follow a set of
correct instructions?
Link to Geography and Maths

E-safety outside the classroom (ongoing

development of skills)
How can we stay safe?
Who should we talk to?
Are all websites safe?
Algorithms/ Programming
Logical reasoning to predict behaviour
(debugging programs)
Algorithms and programming- develop skills
learnt in year 1. Encourage justifications
Begin to understand how input devices can be
used to monitor or change a program

Digital Literacy:
Puppet pals, I can animate etc
- link to Maths, Geography and books can be
used as a stimulus
Understand how to use a microphone and a
digital camera
Use animation

(Use technology safely and respectfully,

keeping personal information private; identify
where to go for help and support when they
have concerns about content or contact on the
internet or other online technologies).
Fluent users

Key Stage 2
Autumn Term
Programming: Link with Maths
What is an algorithm?
Can the children use Scratch?
Do they understand the process?
Can they use computational thinking to justify reasons as to
why their program went wrong?
Can they debug

E-safety promoted throughout

Year 3
Year 4

Spring Term
The Internet:
P.S.H.E link What do you know about the
internet?
Are all search engines safe?
Can children find relevant information?

Summer Term
Networks:
Following on from e-safety policy, do the
children know what an email address is?
Have they used one?
What does it do?

Look at e-safety policy children signed what

do they notice?
Do they understand it?

(Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and
communication technology)

The Internet:
What is the internet?
Who uses it?
Are all websites relevant?
Are they all safe?
Is there more than one search engine?

Computer Networks:
Using digital literacy, can the children find
other tools which can be used for
communication?
(Wiki, Weebly, Learning Network)
Begin to understand the importance of the
internet and how the network operates

E-safety should be developed and promoted.

How to use IT:
Do the children know what and how to use Microsoft?
Can the children use blogs effectively?
Can the children use other devices instead of just a computer?

Programming: Use Scratch and Logo

Can they create and debug data?
Can they use logical thinking?
(Use sequence, selection, and repetition in
programs; work with variables and various
forms of input and output).

Key Stage 2
Spring Term

Computers:
What is inside a computer?
Can we use programs to turn on and off
devices such as buzzer, light?
(Raspberry Pi, Lego)

Programming:
Understand simple Binary (tree diagrams)
Use computational thinking to support
learning
Use pictures to support progression

Summer Term
Look at policies implemented
throughout school. Are there
issues which have not been
considered, could the
children write their own?

E-safety should be promoted throughout. Cross-curricular learning can take place to

enhance teaching.

Year 6

Year 5

Autumn Term

Children should be promoting fluency in using technology

Programming:
Lego we do alongside Scratch
Can the children use input and output
devices to make something move?

Computers:
What is inside a computer?
Can we use programs to turn on and off
devices such as buzzer, light?
(Raspberry Pi, Lego)

Digital literacy:
Understand
podcasts, Film,
Animation

HTML
Debugging using logical reasoning to explain
algorithms
Look more at binary

Children should be promoting fluency in using technology.

How to use IT
Produce a presentation
using digital literacy
based on a theme. For
example using a blog,
creating animation etc.
Focus could be:
Core subjects
Foundation subjects
Promote ITalgorithms, e-safety
etc.
