Lesson Plan 3

This lesson plan is for a 5th grade science class about the water cycle. The goals are for students to model and explain the states of matter and how external energy can change matter. Students will make predictions in groups about the properties of water and the water cycle. They will then use online research tools to investigate their predictions. Finally, students will write a summary comparing their initial predictions to what they learned from their research.

Subject:

Science

Grade:

Goals/Objectives/Standards:
Montana Science Content Standard 2.4
Model and explain the states of matter are dependent upon the quantity of energy present in the system and
describe what will change and what will remain unchanged at the particulate level when matter experiences an
external force of energy change
NETS 5.a Technology research tools
a. Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.

Opening/Framing the Lesson/Introduction/Early Assessment
5 mins

Stuends have been doing well with modeling and explaining that
matter exists as solids, liquids, and gases and can change from one
form to another. I want to challenge the students how and why a
matter changes its physical properties. Teacher will explalin that
studying the Water Cycle will help students see what kinds of
energy changes the property of water and why.
The Lesson Structure: Activities
Students will make predictions about the water cycle based on

prior knowledge in groups of two. They will write down any ideas
or predictions on a piece of paper to later read to the class
before learning about the water cycle.
Write questions down on board for students to make
predictions on.
-What are the different properties of water?
-What are the different physical forms of water?
-What happens to water when it evaporates?
-What do you think condensation is?
-Transpiration, or dew, forms from what? And when do we most
often see it?
-What is the largest body of water?
-What do you think Run-off is?

15 mins

After students make predictions, students will each use a

computer to discover if their predictions are correct or not
using the google search engine and websites they find from
that.
Closing/Assessment
They will write a summary of their prediction and what they
found out to be correct or not.
Homework
Summary with predictions and whether they were correct in
their prediction or not.
