What is the ASQ-3?


ASQ 3 stands for Ages & Stages

Questionnaires, Third Edition.


ASQ 3 includes a total of 21
questionnaires ranging for ages 2 months
to 60 months.
21 different questionnaires allows for more
accuracy in determining a childs
development based on the childs age.
ASQ-3 can be performed as needed at 2 or
3 month intervals apart depending on the
age.

Purpose of the ASQ 3


The ASQ 3 is designed to screen young

children for developmental delay- that is,


to identify those children who are in need
of further evaluation and those who
appear to be developing typically. Squires
and Bricker, 2009.

This information is beneficial to parents,


caretakers and teachers so that they are
able to assist and guide the childs
development based on the childs needs.

What does the ASQ-3 Questionnaire screen?


The ASQ-3 screens 5 areas.
Communication

Gross Motor
Fine Motor
Problem Solving

Personal-Social

The ASQ-3 is unique because it can


be completed by a parent or a
collaboration of the parent &
teacher.

The screening also allows parent &


teacher to witness the childs
strengths and those areas which the
child may need to practice.

Expectations of ASQ-3 Screening


Determine the childs current
developmental abilities

Determine those areas which the


student has not mastered or needs
more practice before mastering.

Getting Started
Calculate the childs exact age at the
time of the screening
Subtract the childs date of birth from
date the ASQ-3 was completed OR

Exact age is important because

childrens ages appropriately reflect


the abilities of a child at their age
(month).

For example, it would not be

appropriate to give a 2 month old


the same screening as a 60 month
old because there are clear
differences between both ages.

Completing the Questionnaires


Before Starting
Explain the purpose or process of the

ASQ-3. Emphasize that it is a screening


told that will show you & the parent
where the child stands in their
development in the 5 different areas.

Schedule a time to meet with the


parent(s) & child.

Child should be rested and not hungry.


Prepare the materials you will need (ball,
pencil, scissors, paper, etc.)

Teacher & Parent will work as a team

observations from the childs actions

When Further Action is Needed


When parent & teacher see the results the
options and actions will be discussed and
determined.

Seeing the results should be approached as a


celebration of the childs abilities and the
collaboration of the teacher & parent to
work with the child in those areas which
he/she may need more practice. For
example, saying his/her name, cutting
practice or even pouring liquid into a cup.

In the event that the child needs further


evaluation
Teacher will share information about early

intervention referrals/services in school, school


district, or community.

Teacher/school can refer/recommend the

parent and guide the family for further


evaluation but its ultimately the parents decision
to receive services for their child.

As a teacher, it is always in the best interest of

the children to be honest and positive about the


childs current and future state of development.

Legal Considerations (Confidentiality)


Get permission from parent or guardian before beginning
Know any necessary agreements among the parent & school/program
Teacher obligations
Keep information confidential
Before referring teacher/school must get a Release of information form signed by
family

Best practice: always keep the parent/guardian updated on their childs progress

Family & Community Diversity


The ASQ-3 Screening is great to use for families and communities that are diverse. Families are
diverse in their ethnicity, cultures and even financially. These three factors contribute to the
ability of the families to attend, complete or be involved in any assessment regarding their
children. The ASQ-3 helps with diversities within the families and community in several
ways; convenience, parent inclusion, and the collaboration of the teachers and family. The
screening is convenient because it can be done by the parent themselves or in conjunction
with the teachers. I feel its more beneficial to do it in combination with teachers because all
parties can witness and share about the childs successes and difficulties. The ASQ-3
screening is also convenient because it can be performed in any setting; the classroom or at
the childs home. For these reasons, the ASQ-3 is great to use for families which have
diversities.
