Conic Sections: Section 11.1 - 11.2 Conic Basics & The Parabola

This document discusses conic sections and parabolas. It provides the standard equations for parabolas, defining the vertex as the point equidistant from both the directrix and focus. The steps for graphing a parabola from its equation are given as: 1) determine if it opens up/down or left/right, 2) build from the vertex, and 3) use the distance "p" for both the directrix and focus. Two example problems are included to find the focus and directrix of given parabolas and graph them. Homework practice problems are assigned from the textbook.

ALWAYS THINK VISUALLY!

Vertex is ALWAYS EQUIDISTANT from both!

Standard Equations-

Directrix:

Focus:

(h,k): coordinates of vertex

p distance from vertex to BOTH directrix and focus
Steps to graphing from equation:
1. Does my parabola open UP/DOWN or LEFT/RIGHT?
2. Build from vertex.
3. Use p for both directrix and focus.
Example:
1. Find the focus and directrix of the parabola y

1 2
x and graph.
12

2. Find the focus and directrix of the parabola ( x 2) 2 12( y 4) and graph.
