Educ 5321-Technology Plan Mbektas

This 3-year technology plan for Harmony Public Schools aims to improve use of technology like Chromebooks in the classroom. It recognizes that while Chromebooks are provided to all teachers and students, professional development on using them effectively is still needed. The plan's goals are to evaluate Chromebook usage, provide training to teachers and IT staff, and ensure infrastructure supports classroom activities. Progress will be monitored through surveys, classroom observations, and reviewing usage data to make adjustments that enhance learning with technology.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND
The plan should guide the LEAs use of education technology for the next three
years.

This Technology Plan template is proposed to be implemented in Harmony Public

Schools for 3 years starting from 7/1/2014 to 6/30/2017.
Harmony Public Schools (HPS) is the fastest growing and now the largest charter
public school district in the state of Texas.
There are 43 (K-5, K-8, K-12 and 9-12) campuses around Texas,16 of them are
located in the greater Houston area. This proposal will be prepared by looking at
the North Houston district and generalized for all campuses.
Being the school of choice and Stem academies, Harmonies draw a lot of
students to itself as there are average around 500 students in each campus
waiting list.
District has a younger/lower average teacher age as compared to other public
schools and this makes technology improvements/implementations more
successful, as younger generation teachers feel more comfortable with the
technology.

This template is a collaborative work of the District and campus Administrators

and IT dept. While putting the goals and objectives together we have looked at
the TEAs and California Dept. of Educations Technology Plan

templates/guidelines.
California Dept. of Education has just released (on 11/03/2014) its Technology
plan template for local education agencies in the state of California,
Teachers and students are all equipped with Chromebooks and
they are being used on a daily bases in the classrooms. There
were very limited professional development for teachers and
students for Chromebook usage so the benefits were minimal. All
collected data and responses from surveys showed that majority
of the teachers are not really utilizing the Chromebooks other
than using them as typewriters; to type and submit homework.
Tynan, (2013) states that Chromebook are great in classes for
5 major reasons
and usage of Chromebook is spreading among schools. Also
google claims that
Chromebooks are the market leader in school tech usage,
compared to IPads and
PCs.
As Hess, (2014) also mentions that education and
chromebooks is a perfect
match for several reasons.
By utilizing Chromebooks, districts plan is to get student learn and be
accustomed to the effective internet surfing and google educational
services like google docs and google drive etc.
One of the best practices was having students use google spreadsheets to
collaboratively work on assignments and (science fair) projects.

CURRICULUM COMPONENT CRITERIA.

The Plan must establish clear goals and realistic strategy for using
telecommunications and information technology to improve education services.
(Answer at least 2 questions for each subsection below)

At the moment teachers and student at each classroom for any classroom in
grades 6 through12 are equipped with Chromebooks for everyone. Also each
Chromebook has access to internet with web filtering, which is making sure
students are not at risk of running into inappropriate content while browsing.

HPS is determined to get students be technology ready as well as college ready

and life ready.
Computer labs are available for younger students and for middle and high school
student chromebooks are available for them.

Annually there are project/competitions like science fair and web design competitions
among students from all campuses, one of them is called Distco, digital storytelling
contest, and it is very prestigious among teachers and students. In terms of the fiscal
burden, there is almost no financial investment needed other that the carts for each
classroom, as chromebooks were already purchased with RTT (Race to the Top) grant.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMPONENT
The Plan must have a professional development strategy to ensure that staff
understands how to use these new technologies to improve education services
(Answer at least 2 questions for each subsection below)

Currently there are only one IT administrator and one computer teacher, In some
campuses, computer teachers are also the campus IT managers. However there
was almost no Professional development for neither IT managers, nor teachers.
There is great deal of necessity for Professional development both for IT
personnel and teachers so that classroom usage can be more interactive and
informative. Then teachers can teach how to make use of the devices in
particular classes.
.
Also every semester during the regular professional development days
departments shall present the best practices of chromebook usage in their
classes from lead teachers
INFRASTRUCTURE, HARDWARE, TECHNICAL SUPPORT, SOFTWARE, AND
ASSET MANAGEMENT COMPONENT CRITERIA
The Plan must include an assessment of the telecommunication services,
hardware, software, asset management, and other services that will be needed to
improve education services.

(Answer at least 2 questions for each subsection below)

There are chromebooks for every student in each of the 4 core subject area
classrooms. They all are checked out to the teachers and stored in lockable
carts.
Whenever necessary students use chromebooks and teachers explain how to
use chromebooks to their classes.
For any inconveniences or malfunctioning in chromebooks they are taken to
campus IT managers and they take care of the issues.

Describe the technology hardware, electronic learning resources, networking and

telecommunications infrastructure, physical plant modifications, technical
support, and asset management needed by the LEA's teachers, students, and
administrators to support the activities in the Curriculum and Professional
Development components of the plan.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION COMPONENT
The plan must include an evaluation process that enables the school to monitor
progress toward the specific goals and make mid-course corrections in response
to new developments and opportunities as they arise.
(Answer at least 2 questions for each subsection below)

At the end of each 9 weeks teachers shall be asked to evaluate the usage of
technology including chromebooks and their suggestions, result data will be
processed to improve the possible weak areas in tech implementation.
Teachers use also shall be monitored while admins do walk-in visits to the
classrooms and evaluate teachers comfort level with usage. If there is need,
teachers shall be sent to additional PDs for improved usage of technology in
classrooms.
For classroom usage, evaluation if the effectiveness of the implementation will be
measured via surveys and teachers effective usage will be done by the school
administration via walk in visits.
Campus administrators and district personnel also shall be provide with
necessary education so that they can evaluate the teachers usage while walkins.
