Become A Nurse Final Draft

The document discusses a recruitment poster from World War II that aimed to recruit women as nurses. The poster depicts a young woman receiving her nurse's cap from Uncle Sam. It aimed to portray nursing as an honorable and patriotic role for women through imagery appealing to their nurturing roles. The document also discusses how the military and government more broadly came to recognize women's important contributions to the war effort through jobs in factories and the military. Become A Nurse, Your Country Needs You

This ad which was used by the U.S government for the purpose of
drafting women into the military was published during World War II. The
image shows a classy, young, and beautiful woman in her early to midtwenties.

With

her

red

lipstick

signifying

emotions

of

being

vital,

commanding, visible, and alert stands out even against a red background. A
blue blouse indicating education, protective, peaceful, true blue, and being a
figure of loyalty. The young lady appears to be kneeling forward receiving her
nurses cap as if being knighted from Uncle Sam. The young Caucasian nurse
and her cap appear to be used to show the highest level of womens purity.
Uncle Sam is represented by a man in a red, white, and blue heavy coat with
a few stars on the cuffs. The stars would signify a position of authority such
as a General or, leader. This mans position standing over the woman would
appear to represent societys male dominance over women serving during
the early years leading up the WWII. The words, become a Nurse
appearing in a very beautiful and fancy cursive most closely associated with
a womens touch written in a bigger font than the rest of the message
appear to be drawing the eye of prospective female volunteers.

The

HERNANDEZii

message continues with, YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU, in very bold,

powerful, and masculine lettering which appears to emphasize the need for
female volunteers. The success of this ad, the war, and the United States
depended on marketing campaigns created during this war. This war would
not have been successful without these women volunteers and the great
work they did!
During World War II women seemed to accept the fact that working
in factories and staying with the children was patriotic enough for their liking.
Women made better income in the factories and had more family time after
work. This was a marketing challenge because of the years of training that
would have been required to join the military. The military had an uphill
battle trying to convince women that the military was a better choice.
Images like the one below were created to show women being happy,
establishing new careers, and defending the United States in a more hands
on role. The women were the focus of these ads because of the motherly
intuition, the affectionate care, and the loving emotion that only they could
provide. Catch phrases like, save his life and find your own. and, The
touch of a womans hand. were created. The purpose of these phrases were
to pull at heart strings of able body women. For these reasons and many like
them the ads never showed men as nurses.
Some of the reasons women volunteered for the war are very simple.
These women had already lost a family member be it a son, brother, father,
or husband. The military knew as wrong as it may be that they could use this

knowledge to convince women to join. Women performed a number of duties

while in the service. Some of these duties include airplane mechanics,
laboratory technicians, and pilots. Other women chose to be trainers for the
artillery gunners. Women also served along the front line during combat
missions. Women knew that many sacrifices were going to have to be made
in order to win the war. Even with the knowledge of possibly dying, women
were aware that their addition to the war could benefit everyone in the
country and, potentially prevent more bloodshed. These women performed
honorably and proudly.
During this period of time women werent looked at equals in the job market.
They were often told that a working woman is wrong because shes taking a
job from a more capable man.
Before WWII womens rights were not seen as important. As the
war progressed the U.S realized that womens equality needed to be
improved on. Womens value during the war increased tremendously with
the creation of factory jobs and unions to ensure equal pay for equal work as
well as better working conditions along with the introduction of, Rosie the
Riveter a powerful young lady who flexes her muscles almost defying
stereotype of a housewife with the phrase, yes we can! With the
improvements in the way that society would look at females it made it a lot
easier for women to take a position in the war and know that her service,
sacrifice and knowledge would be acknowledged and rewarded. These

improvements made the war, society and the country great reasons for
women to volunteer.
Woman not only established themselves as a powerful group when
united, but also a very necessary part of the community, economy, job
market, and military. Women have left blood, sweat, and tears in the
battlefield alongside male counterparts in every war since World War II.
Weve come to expect the loving, caring, and nurturing affection that can
only come from female nurses. The fact that women pilots are as common as
male pilots is a tribute to the resiliency and hard work of women. The fact
that women stepped up and accepted the challenge put in front of them says
a lot to the determination and courageous personalities that are present
within them.
