The Reciprocal of A Fraction Will Always Have The Same Sign As The Original Fraction

To solve equations with fractions: multiply both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of any fractions terms to isolate variables; the reciprocal of a/b is b/a and maintains the original sign; be careful not to lose negative signs when canceling or reducing fractions; and multiply both sides of the equation by the lowest common denominator to eliminate fractions as quickly as possible.

Intermediate Equations - Equations with Fractions

I.

If the variable is being multiplied by a fraction and there are no other

fractions in the equation, isolate this term (if necessary) and then multiply
both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of the fraction to get the
variable by itself.

II.

The reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2, and the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2. Note that
the reciprocal of a fraction will always have the same sign as the
original fraction.

III.

When canceling or reducing in equations that involve fractions, be careful

not to lose track of any negative signs.

IV.

As a general rule, if an equation has any fractions in it, try to get rid of
the fractions as soon as possible.

V.

The quickest way to get rid of a fraction in an equation is to multiply both

sides of the equation by the denominator of the fraction.

VI.

If youre multiplying both sides of an equation by a number, and there are

two terms on one side of the equation, make sure you distribute the number
through both terms.
