Digital Change Detection

Change detection analysis is a digital image processing technique used to detect changes between images collected on two or more dates. There are several common methods for change detection including image differencing, ratioing, and post-classification comparison. Image differencing involves subtracting one image from another, where no change pixels equal zero and other values indicate change. Post-classification comparison classifies each image separately and then compares the classified images on a pixel-by-pixel basis to identify changes. Both radiometric and geometric calibration of the images is important for accurate change detection. Common sources of unwanted change like differences in phenology or sun angle should also be minimized.

DIGITAL CHANGE

DETECTION

Change Detection Analysis

It is a digital image processing technique to

detect change using data (images) which
have been collected in 2 or more dates
(multi-temporal data)

Change Detection: Methods

Basic model:

Inputs:
image from Date 1
image from Date 2

Potential output:
Map of change vs. no-change
Map describing the types of change

Change Detection Procedure

1. Image Registration:
The two images must be precisely registered to one another
to perform accurate change detection
Any Slight Mis-registration will introduce error that will
cause substantial change detection error
2. Image Transformation
If (Atmospheric, sun angle, soil moisture problems) exist
data transformation can solve the problem: radiometric
correction, image normalization, etc.

Change Detection: MethodsMULTIDATE COMPOSITE IMAGE

color guns of display
No-change is greyish
Change appears as non-grey

Change Detection: MethodsImage Ratioing

Date 1 / Date 2
No-change = 1
Values less than and
greater than 1
indicate change

Change Detection: Methods: Postclassification (delta classification)

Most Commonly used method

Classify Date 1 and Date 2 separately, compare class values
on pixel by pixel basis between dates
The two maps are then compared on a pixel-by-pixel basis
using a change detection matrix,
Unfortunately, every error in the individual date
classification
map will also be present in the final change detection map.
Therefore, it is imperative that the individual classification
maps used in the post classification change detection
method be as accurate as possible.

Change Detection: Summary

Radiometric, geometric calibration critical

Minimize unwanted sources of change
(phenology, sun angle, etc.)
Differencing is simple and often effective
Post-classification may have multiplicative error
Better to have a reference image than not
