Earthing Calculations Part1

This document provides calculations to check the cross-sectional adequacy of the underground earthing conductor for a substation project. It determines that the minimum required area is 843.75 mm2 based on a short circuit current of 45 kA at 415V. The selected flat earthing conductor has an area of 520 mm2, so two conductors laid side by side are needed to meet the minimum required area of 1040 mm2. The equivalent diameter of a rod with this area is calculated to be 36 mm.

Check for Cross-sectional Adequacy of Selected Underground Earthing Conductor

The minimum cross-sectional area for Underground Earthing Conductor is determined by
I x t
Ks

Area A =
Where

A = area of earth conductor in mm2.

I = short circuit current in KA.
t = duration of short circuit current in seconds.
Ks = K Factor for Steel = 80

We know that the

Short Circuit Fault Current at 415V is I0.415sc = 45 KA for a duration of 1 sec
And
Short Circuit Fault Current at 11KV is I11sc = 25.8 KA for a duration of 1 sec
Calculating for the greater Short Circuit Fault Current at 415V,
Area A =

50 x 1000 x 1
80
= 625 mm2

Giving 35% allowance for corrosion

Minimum Required Area Amin =

625 x 1.35 = 843.75 mm2

Since selected Underground Earthing Conductor is flat of size is 65 mm x 8 mm,

Area of selected Earthing Conductor

= 65 x 8 = 520 mm2

Hence two nos. such conductors have to be laid side by side i.e. the effective

Area of Underground Earthing Conductor Acon should be

2 x Area of Earthing Conductor Acon = 2 x 65 x 8 = 1040 mm2

To ensure that

Acon > Amin

The equivalent diameter (in mm) de of a rod having the same area as calculated
above is
de =

4 x 1040 mm
