Nova provides plenty of soft resting space with big seat cushions that are filled with feathers and foam that keep the cushions in
shape and ensure long life. Side tables can be attached firmly to the end of the sofa for a functional, open-ended design. Loose back
cushions add a laid-back touch to the sofa, as well as providing you with extra, added comfort.

One of the biggest challenges living in a city the size of
Tokyo is making the most of your living space. Japanese
homes are relatively small compared to other parts of
the world, and this is especially true in big cities, where
housing prices are very high. A typical Japanese home
is less than 1,100 sq. ft., and usually combines the living
and dining space in one. I live alone in an apartment
with just 400 sq. ft., so you could say that personal

I always suggest an extendable dining table for small-sized homes especially when
the dining and living areas are combined. It gives you more living space during the
week, when the table is only used for the quick meals that are so typical of big city life.
The table can then easily unfold to provide plenty of seating space for inviting friends
over for dinner.
Small living rooms really benefit from nesting tables. Placed next to the sofa, they
keep the center space of the living room clear. The small tables can then be easily
moved around when table space is required, and they can be placed individually
around the room as desired.
I like to use glass or shiny materials, as they help to reflect light around the room.
The transparency of glass leaves an impression of endlessness and makes the room
seem bigger.

Most Japanese homes don't have spare rooms for overnight guests. Sofa beds are the
perfect solution. Many people think that they have to compromise their love of design
when buying a sofa bed. But our range of sofa beds combine aesthetics as well as

Nicola and Nils are in their mid-twenties and have just moved into a new apartment in the vibrant and hip area of St. Pauli in Hamburg,
Germany. They describe their home style as young and simple, with a preference for natural colors and warm tones.
Moving into a new apartment often involves getting
new furniture. But sometimes the sheer range of
options available can turn the joy of buying a new piece
of furniture into a long, time-consuming process. In our
stores, you will meet skilled interior design consultants
who can help and advise you with your interior design
challenges. Here's how Nicola and Nils turned their
apartment into a modern, functional living space with
our help.
Nicola & Nils' interior design challenge
'We love the style of the apartment with its wooden
floors, big windows and tall, white walls. The rooms
are not that big, but beautiful and bright. When we
moved in, we brought along a wonderful mix of things
from our student days and things we had just recently
bought. But unfortunately, we've ended up with too

many things in different colors that leave our living
room looking unfinished and lacking any distinctive
style.
We are both busy with our careers and enjoy going out
in the evenings, so we don't spend a lot of time in our
home. But when we do, we want to be able to relax. The
living room is relatively small, so we want to keep the
amount of furniture to a minimum. It has to be simple,
yet harmonious. So with this in mind, we set out to get
a new sofa and some storage space, mainly for CDs,
DVDs and books to keep our clutter under control.
We had never been to a BoConcept store before, but we
liked the style of their design and the prices. Having
just rented a new apartment, we didn't want to spend a
fortune on new furniture.'
Our solution
Jochen Streinz, who works as an interior design
consultant for BoConcept in Hamburg, came up with
the interior plan for the living room.
'Nicola and Nils were very clear about what kind of
style they liked and what kind of furniture they wanted.
Having seen and measured the room, I started to make
my layout proposal. The room needed a focal point that
would tie in the color scheme of the room. I suggested a
spacious Nova sofa and placed it against the long, main
wall. This became the centerpiece of the room.
With the sofa against the main wall, there was not a
lot of wall space left. And keeping in mind that they
didn't want to overload the room with furnishings,
I came up with some alternatives to a wall system for
storage space. The small Volani unit hides away their

Jochen's drawings. 'It was easy to imagine how this

Living Large in Small Space
Lighten up the atmosphere
Build it high and narrow
D3 Studio, a Tokyo-based architect company, and BoConcept
have worked closely together over the past year to develop a
model for a compact house that has plenty of living space, while
still allowing for a small garden on a lot of land less than 1,300
sq. ft.
With two bedrooms, one bathroom, a combined livingl diningl kitchen area and
entryway, the house is big enough for one family. During this unique collaboration,
BoConcept provided the architects with advice regarding the choice of furniture,
lighting, wall and floor colors suitable for a modern, contemporary-styled house,
where space is key.
As the price of land increases in Japan, the sizes of lots are being reduced to make
them affordable to more people. The small-sized lots set limitations on the size of
the house that can be built on the lot. So what do you do? You build your home
high and narrow so you can fit in all the rooms and belongings you need. This is
truly living large in small space.
Breaking down the walls
The closed, external design of the house is made with respect to the Japanese
culture of privacy. Inside, the Japanese style of living has been fused with the
Scandinavian, with an open plan livingl diningl kitchen area. On one side of the
room, large glass doors invite plenty of light into the room, while also connecting
the indoor area with the small courtyard outside. The open plan room gives you
a sense of space that is hard to find in small-sized homes. The modern staircase
adds character to the room.
When it came to decorating the interior and filling it with furniture, functionality
was key. The furniture had to complement the modern architectural style of the
house, while also taking into consideration space management getting the most

The dining table easily extends for a dinner party of 10
out of the limited space available without cluttering it up too much. The wall
system in the living area provides ample storage space while still looking sleek
and stylish. The coffee table works as a storage space, as well as a perfect place
to work and dine with tabletops that can be elevated into a higher position. In
the dining area, the dining table easily extends for dinner parties and folds back
when the party is over. The sideboard has been lifted from the floor and the wall
shelves are a small work of art that are functional as well.
The kitchen area is defined by a countertop made of steel for a very modern,
industrial look. White lacquered cabinets are mounted onto the wall behind the
counter. The combination of steel and white lacquer makes the kitchen truly
distinctive from the rest of the open room.
Dreamland
The bedrooms are on the 2nd floor. A narrow band of windows by the ceiling
allows as much light into the room as possible without compromising privacy.
The simple room has been turned into a uniquely elegant bedroom, featuring a
low bed, nightstands in black-stained oak and silver wall paper that reflects light
around the room. Back light panels give the room a dramatic atmosphere.
The house will be used as a model home for one year. Customers can buy a similar
house that can be custom fitted to their lot.

The big challenge with home entertainment equipment
is that you can't live without it, while at the same time
you don't want it taking over your living space. Working
with interiors and design furniture, I love LCD flat
screens because they are attractively designed. They
provide the perfect picture in nearly any light and from
nearly any angle, making them easy to place anywhere
in a room.
That doesn't take away from the fact that a TV has
lots of extra gadgets such as DVD players, hard disk
recorders, satellite boxes and game consoles. And
then there are, of course, the cables and wires. It can
easily become a huge mess grounds for a well-known
domestic dispute! Luckily, there are ways to solve this
problem.

Designed to work
First of all, I have to say that there is a world of difference between a randomly selected
shelving system and a home entertainment unit, which is designed specifically for its
purpose. The shelves should be able to hold the weight of all your equipment. A wellconstructed, more stable entertainment unit eliminates unnecessary vibrations and
ensures better sound quality. To optimize storage space, home entertainment units
are also designed with a close eye on the measurements of new DVD players, game
consoles, and CDs and DVDs.

Alternatively, units with adjustable shelving allow you to place the shelves according
to the size of your home entertainment equipment. Many units feature drawers
specifically designed for storing CDs and DVDs. Glass front panels ensure that
your remote control can still remain in contact with your DVD player even though
it is hidden. And finally, wires and cables are also hidden away. So I would always
recommend investing in a piece of home entertainment furniture to get maximum
enjoyment from your TV.

Hide and Seek
I believe that a TV, even the new, elegant LCDs, should complement a room, not
dominate it. It should be difficult to locate the TV at first glance. The Basic XT system,
which features a sliding door to hide the TV, is the ideal solution. On the one hand,
you get enough room for a 50" LCD screen and all the extra gadgets that go along with
it. On the other hand, you can simply slide the door shut to hide the TV, and reveal
your decorative belongings, magazines and books on the other side.

Hide an
To get the most out of your investment, remember what your mother always said about
sitting too close to the TV. For the optimal viewing experience, you need to maintain
the right distance between your viewing area and your television screen.
The right distance depends on the size of your TV:
For 20-27" TVs, you should be able to watch comfortably from 2 to 5 feet away.
For 32-37" TVs, you should sit 6 to 8 feet back from the screen itself.
For 42-46" TVs, you'll need 10 to 14 feet between you and the screen.
For 50"-TVs, the best view is achieved from 12 to 16 feet away.
Make sure that the TV is at a height where your eyes are level with the middle of the
screen. Now lean back, switch it on and enjoy the show!

Streamlined storage
Get organized with different types of storage

Storage to me is not only about a practical space to
hideaway my belongings. It is part of our home, and
so it should be attractive to look at, too. Luckily, today
there are so many different storage options available
where you don't have to comprise on beauty to get
functionality.
Conceal or reveal
First of all, I would always recommend that you
organize your possessions and think about the type of
storage that would be suitable. Do you want to conceal
or reveal? Everyday essentials may not be beautiful to
look at, but we need easy access to them. So drawers in
chests or wall systems are always great to have. Or use
boxes and baskets in open bookcases or on wall shelves.
On the other hand, you don't want to hide it all. Your
personal belongings are the things that turn a living
space into your home.

In the bedroom

Storage space is always in great demand in the bedroom. There are so many different
things to store. Clothing, shoes, bedding, books, the TV and maybe even a small
home office. I always say that a wardrobe can never be big enough, with interior
fittings suited exactly to your needs. In small-sized bedrooms, I would recommend
putting the space beneath the bed to work. Underbed drawers are ideal for hiding
away bedding and clothes.
Nightstands with drawers are great for keeping dust away, and chests of drawers are
the perfect storage provider in the bedroom. Deep drawers provide plenty of space,
but you can easily loose track of your smaller items that are much easier to find in
shallow drawers. And on top of the chest of drawers, I would definitely go for the
sculptural tree to hang your jewelry a perfect example of functionality combined
with beauty.
Small storage
While big wall systems are the ultimate clutter busters because they can be customized
exactly to your needs, I also like to think of alternative storage solutions that are
smaller and less pricey, yet very decorative. Wall shelves are simple and easy on the
eye, and they don't take up a lot of valuable floor space. You can play with combining
them in different ways to create a very streamlined look. Or you can hang them in
spaces that are often redundant, over windows and doors, or on walls below the
staircase. Carefully organized magazines and books, picture frames and sculptural
vases will look great on the shelves.

Pieces of furniture with built-in storage are clever clutter control devices. Coffee tables
with hidden storage space underneath the tabletops are great to hideaway the living
room essentials such as remote controls, newspapers and TV guides, throws and
tablemats. Or go for room dividers that are functional as well as pleasing to the eye.
And they don't block light or the view entirely.
I can't get enough of boxes and baskets in different shapes and beautiful colors. They
help to keep dust away from your belongings and can turn a boring shelving system
into a unique, eye-catching design. Try lining several identical boxes up on a shelf for
a very effective look.

An idea comes to life
Anders Nrgaard was born in 1958 in
Snderborg, Denmark. Received his Masters
in Architecture from the Aarhus School of
Architecture in 1989. He now lives with his
wife and two children in Aarhus, Denmark.
The journey from idea to final product can encounter many obstacles and challenges along the way. Anders Nrgaard, Morten Georgsen and
Jose Garcia design furniture that not only looks fantastic, but is functional and has value for money too. Here are the stories of how two pieces
of furniture made their way from the minds of our designers into the homes of many people around the world.
Hard work turned into easy living
Hopper started out as a vision for Anders Nrgaard. He wanted to make a spacious
lounging chair that had a small physical footprint and a graceful visual expression.
'A lounging chair usually takes up a lot of space. But by using string webbing and a
lightweight steel construction, I brought a sense of lightness to the chair. It is easy
to live with and look at and to move around. However, that's not to say it was a
straightforward design process.
After the first lines were drawn, I began to make the technical drawings for our
production engineers. To underline the chair's lightness its steel frame only has two
joints. This became a technical challenge as the seat is very wide so the joints had to
be extremely strong.'
When the first prototype of the Hopper chair arrived, Anders Nrgaard was not
satisfied. 'It was too big. So I minimized the size of the frame.'

Cool and comfy
'Also, the nylon web was not made according to my initial thoughts and drawings.
So I asked for a Hopper frame to show how the web should be done in order to make
it possible. While I waited for the Hopper frame to arrive, I used the frame of an old
chair at home and practiced on this. If the string web is made correctly, excellent
seating comfort is achieved. The nylon cord is difficult to work with, but it gives the
chair a very modern, transparent look and a light bouncing effect for great seating
comfort. The web has to be tightened in exactly the right places so it rises around the
back frame. Otherwise you'll feel the steel frame pushing into your back. When the
Hopper frame arrived, it took me a whole day to do the web, but I was able to show
that my idea actually worked.'
Using the homemade chair as reference, the final prototype was made and Anders
Nrgaard was happy. 'It's a great-looking, very comfortable chair that can be used
in many different settings and situations. And that is what good design is about.
The lightness and transparency that we have achieved with the Hopper chair is very
modern, and I could easily imagine that the chair will lead to a whole Hopper family
in the future.

Jos Garcia was born in 1968 in Paris,
France. Received his degree as an Industrial
Product Designer from the CEU University
of San Pablo, Spain in 1993. He now lives in
Valencia, Spain where he works closely with
Morten Georgsen.
Morten Georgsen was born in 1958 in
Odense, Denmark. Received his Bachelor
of Commerce from Aarhus University,
Denmark in 1982. Specialized in design, and
now has his own design company, Futhark,
based in Valencia, Spain.
A new generation of wall systems
Morten Georgsen and Jose Garcia have designed many different wall systems for
BoConcept over the years. 'Taking our inspiration from big city lifestyles and trends,
we found an emerging demand for wall systems that could hold different sized objects
within one unit. It had to be multifunctional, yet still feature many beautiful design
elements. The love of design is greater than ever before.
When we started drawing the first lines for the Basic XT, our goal was to create a new
generation of wall system where old meets new. We wanted to combine storing books
and personal belongings together with storing the latest technology that is entering
our homes.
Our ideas don't just come out of the blue. We benefit continually from our dialogue
with BoConcept stores around the world, and the close contact they have with our
customers. When we presented the first prototype of Basic XT, the American sales
staff insisted that the TV section had to be able to accommodate a 60" flat screen.
I knew the system could store a big-sized screen, but in fact we had to change the
measurements to ensure that the system was ready for the future.

Great design is a process
'Creativity and open-mindedness are often connected with designers and their work.
And these competencies are just as important during the development phase as they
are in the initial idea stage.
This has also been the case with the Basic XT, where we have had to be open to new
materials, elements and feedback from markets and production engineers. The big
sliding door that can either hide the TV or books and other objects was a challenge.
The door had to move smoothly and easily every time. We looked at numerous sliding
systems that met our requirements according to quality and price. Our prototype
engineers had to mount most of them before we were able to find the best solution for
this product. It is also about trust between the designer, and the production engineers.
We work closely together, and I know that they are as passionate about the design as I
am and that they will go above and beyond to achieve the best possible result.
This process is what makes good-looking design great. Basically, great design is about
making things work without compromising the beautiful design and great value that
are key elements of BoConcept furniture'.

The art of light
How lighting can change the atmosphere of
your room

In my daily work as a stylist in our Glasgow store, I use
lighting as an important part of creating atmosphere
in our room sets and many customers have questions
about lighting in general. Good lighting can make or
break a decorating scheme and should be considered
just as important as the furniture in your room.
Set the mood
I always distinguish between three types of lighting
when advising our customers. Mood, feature or
functional lighting. Inspired by clubs and bars, mood
lighting is making a big entrance into our homes. The
new LED lights diffuse a soft light that is ideal for
creating atmosphere. Many new homes feature built-in
LED lighting and in some cases it is possible to change
the color of the light depending on your mood. If you're
not the lucky owner of a new-built home, it is also
possible to have LED lighting where the lights can be
mounted underneath cabinets. Or you can place lights
up behind sofas and beds. It has a dramatic and simply
fantastic effect.
Works of art
1.
Feature lighting is about creating a focal point for the
room. It could be the most important lamp in the room,
or it could be a lamp or light that is so unique in its
expression that it immediately catches the eye. The
pendant above the dining table is a typical example of
a feature light. Or pieces of light art on the wall created
by lighting that is hidden behind panels.
Lamp designs have really changed over the last
few years, and I particularly enjoy the big shades on
pendants and the sculptural light pieces that you can
find in table and floor lamps. They make an instant
statement and add character to a room. The big pendant
shades can be used for so much more than just the
dining area. Try grouping three pendants in different
materials in a corner of the living room or next to a big
lounging sofa for a very modern look. Or use pendants
above nightstands on both sides of the bed. If you want
a formal dining room, a grand pendant or chandelier

Functional lighting

Floor and table lamps are still important pieces of light in our homes because they
can focus light where required, whether it's for reading or working. Floor lamps are
easy to move around, and I would always recommend having at least one floor lamp

Extend the life of your furnishings
Good things last even longer when you take care of
them. Here's how you can take better care of your
BoConcept furniture.
Wood and veneer
Wood and veneer are affected by light. For the
first 6-8 weeks, when the item is first absorbing the
surrounding light, keep the surfaces clear of any
objects or decorations. It is possible that uneven
light absorption could result in permanent marks
and circles. New furniture will also need time to
absorb light before it will match the tone of your
existing furniture.
Water is only to be used in small quantities and
only in the form of a damp cloth. After wiping,
always wipe dry with a dry cloth.
No polish or oil treatment of any form should be
used.
Wood and veneer are very sensitive to liquids.
Therefore, wipe up all spilled liquids immediately.
Always try to remove stains with the mildest
cleaning materials.

Furniture textiles
Ordinary cleaning: Vacuum frequently (once a
week) and use BoConcept Textile Cleaner for
general cleaning.
We recommend treating your fabrics with the
BoConcept Textile Protection to prevent stains
and dirt from penetrating into the textile fibers
before and after having used the BoConcept Textile
Cleaner.
Remove stains by using the BoConcept Spot
Remover Kit. BoConcept stain-cleaning materials
should only be used after they have been tested on
a small, less noticeable area to check the effect on
the material.
Leather
We recommend using BoConcept leather care
products to extend the life of your leather sofa.
Upholstery in general
If possible, switch the seat and back cushions on a
regular basis to extend the life of your cushions and
to ensure even wear over the years.
Cushions with a filling of foaml feathers should be
shaken regularly to ensure form stability.
Expect a 'breaking in' period for your new sofa. The
cushion fillings need time and use to stabilize so
your cushions will feel smooth and comfortable.
All leathers and fabrics will stretch during use.
To achieve the best comfort, covers cannot fit too
tightly. Therefore, some creasing may occur, while
adding character to the sofa or chair.
Protect leather from direct sunlight and heat
sources.
For general cleaning only use a dry soft cloth.
If necessary, wipe or lightly rub the whole surface
with a clean, soft cloth wrung in soapy water.
If vacuum cleaning, use a soft brush nozzle to avoid
scratching the surface.

Delivery & assembly
For quick and easy delivery and assembly, our professional service team can assist
you. They are knowledgeable about our products and will ensure expert assembly,
packaging removal and careful placement of the furniture in your home. Assembly is
free of charge for all BoConcept products and there is a flat rate delivery fee - ask in
store for details and prices.
Delivery time
We have a wide range of products available in our main selection, which can be delivered
in 3-4 weeks. Much of our selection is also customized and delivery time for custommade special orders is 8-10 weeks for board furniture and 12-16 weeks for upholstery. If
the item is in stock, feel free to pick it up from our warehouse right away.
Delivery time may vary based on your location in North America.
Return and exchange policy
If you are dissatisfied with your purchase, you are naturally entitled to return the goods
for a full refund within seven days as long as the item is unused and undamaged, part
of our main selection, and is still in its original packaging. A restocking fee applies to
special order items or if the item has been assembled or the boxes have been opened.
Should the customer wish to have the items picked up, a delivery charge, equal to the
original delivery charge, will also apply. Please see in store for full details of our terms
and conditions. Please note, however, that items bought on sale or as special orders
cannot be returned.

Quality and environment
All our furniture is made from high quality components and based on our passionate regard for functional and affordable design. To achieve
this, we work to find the balance between carefully selected materials, beautiful design and deliberate simplicity.
Ensuring the highest quality in all of our products has always been a natural part of
our concept. This has led us to apply a quality assurance system based on the ISO
9000 standard, and most of our products and accessories live up to European and
international standards. We also design and are in control of the production process
of most of our products ensuring the highest quality every step of the way.
Wood furniture
You will find veneer surfaces on most of our board furniture, such as wall systems,
tables and bed frames. Veneer is just like wood a natural material and variations
in the grain are to be expected. This is what makes each piece of wood furniture
unique.
Glass
Most of our glass tabletops are made of tempered glass for the safety of our customers.
The colored glass plates are scratch resistant and color consistent. All edges are
finished to a high standard.
Metal parts
To reduce impurities, the majority of our metal parts are made from the highest
quality materials. This makes them easier to work with and leaves a smooth surface
with minimum risk of rust.
Upholstered furniture
We are dedicated to ensuring that every single piece of our furniture provides you with
perfect seating comfort. That's why we primarily use high resilient foam in our seat
cushions. High resilient foam is very structurally stable, ensuring optimum comfort
and a long lifetime. Our back cushions are channel sewn, and filled with specially
cut foam mixed with waterfowl down. Alternatively, it's also possible to select high
resilient foam for back cushions on some of our programs. Some models also have
back cushions with fiber filling.
The selection and application of hardwearing materials, which contribute to the
extended lifetime of our products, is a key factor for us. As is the widespread use of
hard woods, especially where strength and stability are required. Our products are
upholstered with foam of a quality that ensures both soft and rounded edges and
corners, meaning that our cover fabrics wear less and last longer.

Leathers and fabrics
We select our leather and fabrics based on the design and function of the individual
products they are to be used for. We guarantee color consistency between different
pieces of furniture - our only requirement is that all the pieces of furniture are ordered
at the same time.
All leathers and fabrics will stretch during use. To achieve best comfort covers cannot
fit too tightly. Therefore, some creasing may occur, while adding character to the sofa
or chair.
CC leather is made from cowhides that have been treated to provide a consistent
structure and provide protection against spotting and stains. CC leather is hardwearing
and retains its appearance over a long period of time. CC leather is very easy to
maintain, and is especially recommended for homes with children and animals.
SA leather is made from New Zealand bull hide, and is known for its characteristic
patina and individual markings. Soft and flexible, SA leather is classified as semianiline, and provides the feel and sensation only possible from the highest quality
leather. SA leather has been treated to increase its lifetime and to ensure maximum
seating comfort.
Our wide range of fabrics has been chosen with the utmost care to ensure the best
possible combination of utility and strength. All our furniture fabrics are tested at
internationally recognized and accredited institutions.
Our fabrics include a range of structures, weaves and finishes that ensure that we are
always able to provide you with a fabric and color that matches your specific needs,
tastes and requirements.
Environment
Our aim is to manufacture products with as little effect on the environment as possible.
We continually strive to make environmental improvements in our production
processes, and we have many positive results which reflect this effort, such as:
Our furniture lacquers are mainly UV-based, which means we have reduced the
use of organic solvents significantly.
All our board furniture is within the E1 norm for formaldehyde emission. By
using UV-based lacquer the formaldehyde is sealed within the furniture board
keeping emissions to an absolute minimum.
