Pendulum Labratory

Nick conducted an experiment to determine what affects the period of a pendulum. He hypothesized that increasing the angle of the pendulum's drop would increase its period. He measured the period of a pendulum dropped at various angles, keeping the length and mass of the pendulum constant. The data showed his hypothesis was partially correct, as period increased with angle up to 90 degrees, but then decreased at higher angles. Comparison to other groups' data revealed inconsistencies. In conclusion, only the length of the string affects a pendulum's period - neither the angle nor mass of the bob have an effect.

Goals - To develop the skills of a scientist

by reviewing the scientific method.

graphing with independent variable as x axis, and dependent variable as y axis
Introducing accuracy, reproducibility and significant figures

Problem

What affects the period of a pendulum?

period = the time a pendulum swings back and forth once

Materials

stand, string, washers, big paperclips, rulers, stop watch

Hypothesis
I think that the angle of the pendulum will affect the period of

a pendulum by increasing the period as the angle rises.

Therefore, my independent variable is the angle of the drop.
Independent variable = manipulated variable-what I am changing

My dependent variable is the length of the period.

Dependent variable = responding variable -what I am measuring

My controlled variables are: are the length of the pendulum and the
weight of the bob

The Angle of The Drop

The period of a pendulum is the time that it takes for the bob to go from one side to
another. In this lab we tested to see if the angle of the drop would affect the period. I
hypothesized that the period would increase the greater the angle. We used a protractor
to measure the angles that we dropped the bob. We kept the controlled variables the
same by not changing the length and weight of the bob. My data shows that my
hypothesis was half correct and half wrong. At angles 25,50, and 90 the period increased
as I had hypothesized however at angles 110, and 130 the period decreased making my
hypothesis incorrect. The other groups texted the same angles being 50,90, and 130.
There data however was drastically different there average time for 1 swing was almost
3 times the number that we had. Only the length of the string effects the length of the
period. Neither the angle nor the weight of the bob will change the period. In conclusion
the period of a pendulum is only affected by the length of the string
