Course Objectives:
To impart the knowledge of designing and applications of different tooling and fixtures
used in industries
Unit I
Introduction to tool design : Different tool materials, Properties of tool materials,
Selection and treatments of materials, Plastics as tooling materials, New tooling
materials, Selection of tool holders and inserts for turning, Chip breakers, Cemented
carbides, Coated carbides, Cermets, Ceramics and Polycrystalline tool materials and
compositions
Unit II
Gages and gage design : Indicating automatic gages, Fixed gages, Selection of
materials, Gage tolerances
Unit III
Design of single point cutting tool : Cutting parameters of a lathe, Different
turning operations, Classification of single point cutting tools, Geometrical parameters
of a single point cutting tool, Design procedure of single point cutting tool,
Resharpening of single point cutting tools, Types and purpose of form tools, Design
procedure and their sharpening, Cutting tools used for turning operations
Unit IV
Design of Milling cutter : Milling operations, Milling cutting parameters, Different
milling operations, Types of milling cutters, Geometrical parameters of a milling
cutter, Design procedure of a disc type milling cutter, Resharpening of the cutters.,
Cutting tools for milling operations
Unit V
Design of drill : Drilling operations, Cutting parameters of drilling operations,
Different drilling operations, Types of drills, Geometrical parameters of a twist drill,
Design procedure of a twist drill, Re-sharpening of the twist drill, Cutting tools used
for drilling operations
Unit VI
Design of Press tool : Press working terminology, Presses and press accessories,
Computation of capacities and tonnage requirements, Strip layout, Types of dies,
Blank development for cylindrical and non cylindrical shells, Simple problems,
Progressive dies, Combination dies, Compound dies
