What is a Phobia

A phobia is an overwhelming and unreasonable fear of an object or situation


that poses little real danger, but provokes anxiety and avoidance.(mayo
clinic)

Can be dangerous

In some cases can lead to death

Types of phobias

Automatonophobia- Fear of ventriloquists dummies, animatronic creatures,


wax statues (anything that falsely represents a sentient being).

Bibliophobia- Fear of books

Consecotaleophobia- Fear of chopsticks

Daemonophobia- Fear of demons

Eleutherophobia- Fear of freedom

Felinophobia- Fear of cats

Geniophobia- Fear of chins

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia- Fear of long words

Isolophobia- Fear of solitude, being alone

Judeophobia- Fear of Jews

Fear of stealing
Lutraphobia- Fear of otters

Symptoms

Feeling uncontrollable panic, terror or dread when exposed to fear

Feeling you must do everything possible to avoid fear

Inability to function normally because of anxiety

Physical and/or psychological reactions (sweating, rapid heartbeat, difficulty


breathing, etc.)

Knowing your fears are unreasonable but feeling powerless to control them

Anxiety just thinking about what you fear

In children, possibly tantrums, clinging or crying (mayo clinic)

Causes

Much is still unknown

Could be genetic or learned behavior

Could be a side effect of a traumatic event

Complications

Social isolation

Depression

Substance abuse

Suicide

Treatment

Prepare for appointment : make list of symptoms, list key personal


information, and make list of all medications

Test and diagnosis: take a medical, psychiatric and social history

Medications: Beta blockers, antidepressants, and sedatives

Psychotherapy: Desensitization or exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral


therapy

Conclusion

Phobias may seem silly or laugh worthy, but to people who suffer from them
they are a serious condition. Most people who suffer from a phobia should get
medical help. Ignoring these problems could result in the death of the
sufferer. Phobias are a serious condition and should be taken seriously.
