Formal Proposal

Title of the magazine you wish to produce:


OFF BEAT
I chose this name because I think out of all my choice it was the
most unique one. Also, I have not seen it be used before in
previous magazines, therefor I thought this one would stand out
to an audience. It sort of represents like an off sounding
rhythm, which is like rock music. Rock music is very wild and all
over the place and never a perfectly practised sound, this
relates genre to the name. The music always has a loud beat in
it; its always banging and constant, which again is presented
through the name.

Explanation of choice of genre:


ALTERNATIVE ROCK
I have chosen to use this genre mainly because throughout my
research I discovered that it is becoming more and more
popular with the public. Mainly younger, but sometimes all ages
are interested in rock music, and alternative rock then gives
them a wider range of that genre to listen to. As well as this,
there are not many magazines nowadays that are based of
alternative rock music genre, which means this would be a
more unique choice and give the audience a wider range to
choose. This contrasts with the point of alternative rock music
in that it originated from independent music underground.

Target Audience:
Female and Male, 16-24 year olds, British
I feel that my genre of magazine is more targeted towards
younger ages because I feel that the stories and images in my
magazine will relate more to the younger generation and they
will enjoy and understand the language more. However, I have
chosen to go up to 24 years old, because I feel that even

though they are older, adults would still be interested in new


genres of music as most of the bands were produced when they
were younger. I feel that both male and female will enjoy my
magazine because it is not at all stereotyped and uses both
genders of artists on my cover. I also felt it would be more
challenging for me to target both genders as they are both
equally interested in this genre. Alternative rock is popular in
Britain, therefor why I chose to target White British.

Initial ideas about front page:


Main Cover line: will be about the main story on the artist
in the main image

Colour Scheme: black and purple with slight bits of yellow


Font: font from the internet (dafont.com). For the larger fonts
I will use Sans Serif or Calibri. For the smaller font I will use the
same as the larger fonts so that the audience can see the more
important and the less important parts.

Skyline: Listed names of other rock bands in the magazine


Pug: Free CD giveaways and concert ticket information
Cover lines: 5 cover lines all based on interviews/ news on
other rock bands/ tours/ gossip

Layout: Following the rule of thirds, all the main information


on the left side of the column

Footer: May not use footer, but barcode and price will be
included at the bottom of the cover.

Initial ideas about the contents page:


Grab Quotes: punctuation to emphasise the quotes, brief to
keep the audience attention

Font: sans serif font for most of the writing but in different
sizes, may also use Arial.

Layout: I will apply the rule of thirds on my contents page. It


would start with the title, then the subtitles and titles of the
articles in my magazines and then the page numbers and
images around.

Issue number and Date: on the strapline of the contents


page.

Ideas for the double page spread:


Layout: the question and answer layout for interviews
Language: formal, answers will be typed how they are said,
may be slang

Title: about the band that are being interviewed on the page
Article Type: question and answer
Subtitle: background information, where the interview is
held, about the band etc.

Topic: interviewing a popular band on a certain band member


and recent events in their job

Font: sans serif for the titles etc. The questions in bold, the
answers slightly smaller writing size.

Ideas for photographs:


Double page spread:
Main image: girl rock band, crazy poses, they dont care, scary
and fearless. Long shot over whole centre page.
Supplement images: maybe a solo artist and one/two boy
bands.

Front Cover:
Main image: one girl from the girl band, motionless, direct
address, rock look.

Contents Page:
Main image: new rock boy band
Supplement images: close ups of each member of the band.
