February 2015 Class Descriptions
Special Events/Classes
Join us in February as we celebrate the Fair and Valentines Day through engaging Science,
Technology, Engineering, Literature and Math programs. Coding, Robotics, Story Science,
Minecraft Education and Stop Motion Movie Making combine for explosive reactions and
interactive activities that encourage critical thinking and problem solving. Academic classes that
provide practice in reading and math skills are also being offered along with fabulous Friday
mornings for our Homeschooled students.

Minecraft Education is an education module of the popular Minecraft game that allows our
instructor to go into the world with the students. This is a seven week class that will infuse
specific education topics into the game.
Tuesday-February 3 through Tuesday-March 24

Students in first and second grade will focus on learning skills that build a solid foundation for
independent reading. Students will be exposed to a variety of genres and provided with
opportunities to expand their comprehension, sight word knowledge and ability to think critically
about literature.

Math: Multiplication/Division

Grades 3-5

Students in third through fifth grade will practice and review multiplication and division facts
through visual, tactile and auditory activities.

Weebots Robotics
(7 week class)

This is a seven week course that introduces young students to robotics. Student will build and
program small robots, creating different programs to change the actions of each. Legos,
instruction, computer programming, supplementary literature activities and problem solving
combine to stimulate the minds of young engineers.

Older students think critically to build and program complex robots. Students will delve into
teamwork, programming and other facets of robotics as they problem solve to create more
complex working robots.

Reading Skills

Students in grades 3 through 5 will read and critically respond to a variety of genres. Additional
activities that support complex reading strategies will foster active and strategic reading skills
while improving reading comprehension.

Coding or Story Science (see calendar)
Grades 2 - 8

These one time classes focus on Coding Skills or Story Science.
* February 4-Coding: Valentines Day Card Students will create a Valentines Day Card from a
blank screen through code! Characters, movement and more will culminate in a love-ly project!
* February 11-Story Science Heart Parts
Students will read Magic School Bus Inside the
Human Body and learn about how the heart works.
* February 18-Coding: Candy Quest
Students will have a sweet time learning to code!
* February 25-Story Science: Flower Power Students will read The Curious Garden by Peter
Brown. They will understand the science of flowers focusing on how flowers can tell us about
humidity in the air. Humidity has important effects on the weather. Students will learn this by
comparing changes in materials caused by heating and cooling, differentiating forms of energy
and identifying changes in physical properties of ingredients of solutions.

Students will learn math skills associated with first and second grade standards. Visual, tactile
and auditory learning activities will engage students and create a variety of learning
opportunities.
Friday-February 6 through Friday-March 27

Students will be provided with a variety of STEM lessons that include coding and story science
activities such as Pompeii, where students learn about Pompeii and build an active volcano.
Students will meet for 2.5 hours each Friday morning and leave with additional activities to
complete at home.

instructor to go into the world with the students. This is a seven week class that will infuse
specific education topics into the game. The class will focus on the topic of weather through the
month of January and then move in February to designing the Martin County Fair for our
February theme!
