Patient Medication Compliance

Patient medication compliance refers to how well a patient follows a prescribed medical treatment plan such as taking medications correctly. It is an important factor in whether drugs will be effective for a patient, as Dr. Koop notes that "drugs don't work in patients who don't take them." While compliance often refers specifically to medication use, it can also apply to following other medical advice such as device use or self-care routines. Compliance differs from concordance, which involves shared decision making between the patient and clinician. Today, adherence is a more commonly used term that captures diverse reasons why patients may not follow treatments fully.

DEFINITION
COMPLIANCE(alsoadherence,capacitance
) describes the degree to which a patient correctly
follows medical advice.
Commonly, it refers to medication or drug
compliance, but it can also apply to other
situations such as medical device use, self care,
self-directed exercises, or therapy sessions.

Compliance is commonly confused

withCONCORDANCE, which is the process by which
a patient and clinician make decisions together about
treatment.

Today, health care professionals more commonly use

the term "adherence" to a regimen rather than
"compliance", because this term is thought to reflect
better the diverse reasons for patients not following
treatment directions in part or in full.
Additionally, the term adherence includes the ability of
the patient to take medications as prescribed by their
physician with regards to the correct drug, dose,
route, timing, and frequency.
