Poetry Unit- NOTES

To write and appreciate poetry, you should understand:


No one gets it right the first time. Revising is an important step in poetry.
When you write poetry, make sure you are clear in what you want to say.
Have good organization, clear ideas, clear voice, and details that reflect the
senses (hear, sight, touch, smell, taste).
Make supportive statements or convey constructive criticism in a respectful
and appropriate manner.
Develop an appropriate and personal writing style.
Use various types of phrases to produce fluent, connected, and interesting
writing.
Choose vocabulary that will effectively communicate your intent and voice.
Essential questions to be answered at the end of this unit:
Analyze the characteristics of various types of poetry.
Develop an appropriate and personal writing style while writing poems.
Use dictionaries and thesauri when choosing words for poems.
Edit a poem for mechanical correctness for self and others.
Use presentation techniques to publish a final copy of a poem.
Write creative pieces.
Know the difference between a proper poem: Use good grammar, spelling,
mechanics vs. a personal poem: uses slang, less formal mechanics, etc.
