Analysis of Drive opening scene

In this establishing shot were see a

view over the city of Los Angeles. In
this opening we also see the use of
tracking across the city to show the
size of the area and to set the scene.
There is also a use of diegetic sound
in the background.

You then see a tilt shot up at the

actor (Ryan Gosling), with the
character in the position of a freeze
frame. This is used to represent the
name of the Film as well as also being
used to give an indication to the
audience of who the main character.
Continuity editing Is used to carry the
scene across without disruption
making sure that the film opening

There is a sense of suspicion and

curiosity to the shot, with an
unknown factor of where the
character is going. The use of the
overhead shot also builds up the
tension that we are seeing and what
is going to happen. At this point as
well we havent seen a large amount
of shots so we still dont know that
much information on what is going to

This is an over the shoulder shot from

the point of view of the driver. The
mise en scene presented to us
consists of dark colour and with little
use of the characters body in the shot
apart from the start of his arm. There
is also little movements from the actor
moving the wheel which makes us
think that he is only trying to get away
from somewhere. It can also be
thought of as a convention of this film

The constant tracking and look for a

reaction which hasnt appeared along
with non-diegetic sound that makes us
more suspicious as tension is being
built as to what is going to happen.
The use of this high angle shot with
the tracking from above doesnt follow
the logical path of shots that you
expect to see next and reinforces the
suspicion of the character driving the
car.

We see a pan shot use to follow the

car into the parking spot, this is also
where we first see some sought of
light. This allows the audience to
think to them of what is going to
happen next.

In the mid shot its the first time that

we see the character not driving. You
can also see a person as well who may
or may not have anything to do with
our character, there is also low use of
lighting here which could be used to
reflect the mood of the character or of
what is going to happen next.

This long shot of Gosling has shown

him to flat/hotel room? Made by the
suspicions of if anyone is already in
the room. This also follows a
continuous pattern as well. The use of
staying in this accommodation makes
us wonder what he is hiding from. At
this point the music also stops as well.

From the long shot of him leaving the

room the character looks unfazed and
spends little time in the room and
doesnt look behind which could be a
sign of him showing his confidence or
could reveal that the audience have
gathered the wrong perception of the
character.
