Dear Third Grade Parents,
Problem solving is considered a critical part of mathematics. Problem
solving is the reason we teach mathematics. My teaching experiences
have convinced me that problem solving must be systematically taught
to students. The more strategies that we are able to share with our
children, the more successful they become, This packet contains
problem solving strategies that are appropriate for your 3rd grader.
They include:
1. Write a Number Sentence
2, Make a Model or Act it Out
3. Draw a Diagram or Picture
4, Find a Pattern
5. Make a Table or Graph
6. Use Logical Reasoning
7. Make an Organized List
8, Predict & Test or Guess, Check & Revise
9. Work Backward
10, Solve a Simpler Problem
Some of these strategies are known by several different names
depending on the math book publisher. Your child may need some
assistance with this packet depending on their experience and
confidence with problem solving Modeling your thinking will help guide
your child as they listen to you analyze the situation, make a decision on
which strategy to use, and work through the problem step by step.
This math talk should eventually become your child's responsibility as
they become more confident in their problem solving abilities. Tf you
have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected].
Sincerely,
