Lab Report Microbes

This lab report describes an experiment where students swabbed various surfaces around their school to test for microbial growth. The surfaces swabbed included a toilet seat, microwave, water fountain, and door handle. The swabs were streaked on a tryptic soy agar plate and incubated. The results showed the most growth on the water fountain sample and no growth from the toilet seat or microwave. The conclusion states that sampling earlier in the day may have yielded different results since the areas tested had recently been cleaned.

MICROBES ALL AROUND US (LAB REPORT)

Microbes All Around Us (Lab Report)

Microbes are tiny single-cell organisms that are the oldest form of life on earth. These
organisms include bacteria, fungi and protozoan parasites. Bacteria are rod-shaped, spheroidal or
spiral single-celled microorganisms without a nucleus. Microbes can be found in the air, in
soil, in water and are on our body. In this particular assignment the class went around the school
and swabbed different parts of the school to see what we would grow on our TSA plate.
Materials List:
4 sterile swabs
1 TSA (Tripticsay Agar Plate)
Sharpie
In this assignment we took a TSA plate and drew four quadrants on the back of it. Each
quadrant was labeled properly. I went to four areas in the school; toilet seat of womans
restroom, the inside of the microwave, water fountain and the door handle where you
would enter the school. I took different swabs and swabbed the area opened TSA plate
and wiped a streak in each quadrant. After each quadrant was done I put our groups
name on the plate and stuck it in the incubator upside down.

Discussion
In our results I found that the water fountain had the most growth and the toilet seat and
the microwave had no growth. I was very surprised by the results I assumed that the
toilet seat would have the most bacteria because so many people are in and out of
restrooms. Nothing happened that was unanticipated that could have altered the results.
Conclusion
In conclusion if I did the assignment over I would have swabbed at a different time
because it was late in the evening and the areas I swabbed had been cleaned. Im sure if I
would have swabbed earlier I would have come up with better results.
