Masks are found in many cultures around the world and serve various functions. They can be two-dimensional representations of faces or three-dimensional sculptures. Masks have been used since prehistoric times for rituals, ceremonies, entertainment, and to conceal identity. There are two basic types - helmets that cover the entire head and face masks. Masks from different cultures represent spirits, emotions, and characters from stories and are often richly decorated works of art that provide insight into cultural traditions and beliefs.

found in many cultures
around the world.
They are often rich
colorful works of art.
By studying masks we can
gain a deeper
understanding of how
masks are used in a
different cultures.

A mask can be a 2 dimensional
or 3 dimensional representation
of a face.
Masks are a
symbolic
representation of
human expressions
and emotions

Masks were used
before recorded
history.
This 15,000-year-old
drawing depicting a
hunter, was found on
a cave wall in
southern France.

Masks
Masks have several functions:
(1)To conceal ones identity
(2)For expression or amusement
(3) For rituals or ceremonies

Masks
There are two basic types of masks:
Helmet - covers your entire head.
Face- covers your face.

One of the most


famous masks is the
death mask of Pharaoh
Tutankhamen.

AFRICA
African masks often
represent the spirits
of dead ancestors.
Masked family
members act out
special rituals to
pass on sacred
teachings from one
generation to the
next.

MEXICO
We find like uses of masks
throughout Mexico in The
Day of the Dead ceremonies
These masks represent the
souls of deceased ancestors
which are invited to return to
earth to enjoy their family
and friends again.

Italy
The masks of
commedia del arte
of the 16th century
represent different
emotive qualities
these were used by
traveling musicians,
acrobats, actors, and
poets to tell stories.

Greece
These are the masks of
comedy and tragedy.

COMEDY & TRAGEDY

They are used as a


symbol of the modern
theater and originated in
Greece.

INDIA
In northeastern India there is
a three day spring dance
festival held in honor of the
god Shiva.
Shiva represented by this
mask, is the creator and the
destroyer of the universe.

JAPAN
The beautifully hand
carved wooden masks of
Japanese theatre were first
used about 600 years ago
in religious plays that
were only seen by priests
and nobility.
Old people, gods,
goddesses and goblins
are among the characters
in Japanese theatre.

North America
This false face mask is an
example of a kind of mask
made by the Native Americans.
It was used by medicine men
to chase away the evil spirits,
through its healing powers.

create as your mask.
