Lab No 1-Ecd

This document summarizes an experiment to obtain the voltage-current (V-I) characteristic curve of a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) and determine its breakover voltage (VBR) and holding current (IH). The apparatus includes a voltage supply, breadboard, SCR, resistors, diode, voltmeter, ammeter and wires. The SCR characteristics are studied by varying the anode-cathode voltage and measuring the corresponding anode current while keeping the gate pulse constant or varying. The breakover voltage is determined by increasing the anode-cathode voltage with a low gate pulse. Observations and calculations are tabulated to plot the SCR characteristics.

SCR:
SCR also called as a silicon controlled rectifier is an
electronic component that can be thought of as a switch. An SCR
is a four layered and three terminals device that can be
triggered to conduction by providing a gate pulse or providing a
breakover voltage. An SCR has many applications such as value
control, power control and most important of all power control.
An SCR can be used as a switc also, once turned on an SCR can
work in its ON state even if its gate pulse is removed. To turn
OFF the SCR the anode current has to be dropped below a specific
value called the holding current.

Characteristics of SCR:
o To study the characteristics of SCR, the connections are
made according to the circuit diagram.
o Now first keeping the gate pulse constant different values
of anode current IA are obtained by variying the voltage
from anode to cathode.
o Then the gate pulse is varied and and readings are obtained.

o Breakover voltage is then studied by keeping the gate pulse

at a low value and providing a high value of anode to
cathode voltage.
All these values are used to plot the characteristics of the SCR.
