Math
Standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction
within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2
+ 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13
- 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction
(e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent
but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent
6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Objective (Explicit):
Students will be able to use unifix cubes to create and identify multiple ways
of making 10 by adding two numbers together.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):

Guided Practice
Teacher Will:
Explain that when students return to their seats they will
take two rods of unifix cubes and place them on their
nametag. Teacher will call tables to return to their seats.
Teacher will pass out materials, but advise children not to
touch the materials until told to do so. The teacher will
model on the document camera the first two examples
on the worksheet. The teacher will model the first
example 100%. For the second example, the teacher will
only model the first part and then ask for feedback from
the students in order to solve the rest. She will ask the
quietest friend to come up and show the answer on the
document camera. Then, the students will be asked to fill
in the remaining blanks on the worksheet using their
manipulatives. The teacher will walk around the room
and provide academic feedback to students. How do you
know that three plus seven equals ten?
Student Will:
Students will return
to their seats. The
students will each
take one strip of red
cubes and one strip
of blue cubes and
place them on their
nametags. The
students will also
take one worksheet
from the tub in the
center of their table.
The students will
watch the teacher
model on the
docucument camera
the first two
examples on the
worksheet. The
students will follow
along on their
worksheets. The
students will fill in
the remaining blanks
on their worksheets
using their
manipulatives.
Independent Practice
Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation
Teacher can have a stuggling student work with their shoulder buddy to create
ways of making ten together.
Using manipulatives will be benficial to many students.
Teacher Will:
Teacher will ask the students to place their papers back
in the tubs in the middle of their tables. The teacher will
ask the students to place their unifix cubes on their
nametags. The teacher will then ask the students to join
her on the floor in front of the promethean board. The
teacher will model how to complete the first problem on
the worksheet and then advise students to work
indpendently to complete the other three. The teacher
will then pass out the assessment worksheet. The
teacher will emphasize if the students need to use their
unifix cubes to model a number sentence before coloring
the worksheet they can. The teacher will explain, for
Student Will:
Follow directions and
place all 20 cubes on
their nametag. The
students will
complete the
assessment
worksheet
independently. If
needed, the students
can use the unifix
cubes for assistance.
Early finishers will be
those who finish early, I want you to flip your paper over
and try to write all of the ways of making 10 using
addition! Ill give you a hint, there are 11 ways!
Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation
Teacher will check in with Lucille and Mieka every two minutes to track
understanding and progress
Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections:
Ask the students what we have learned today? Have students pair and share
something that they learned today. Explain that there are many ways to make the
number 10.
