Formatting Works Cited

Formatting an MLA Paper: The Works Cited Page

1 Margins
1. Click on the Page Layout tab
at the top of Word.
2. Click the Margins button on
the top left, and set the margins
to Normal. The margins will be
one inch on each side.

Page Number
1. Click on the Insert tab at the top of Word.
2. In the Header & Footer section, select Page Number, Top of
Page, and Plain Number 3. This should add a number 1 to the
top right side of the page
3. Type your last name in front of the number, and add one
space.

Highlight the number and your name, and click on the home tab.

5. In font, select Times New Roman, and make sure it is set at


12 pts.
6. When finished, double click underneath the blue dotted

line
to get out of the header area.

Line Spacing and Font


1. On the Home tab, go to the
Paragraph section and click
the symbol in the bottom
right corner.
2. In the box under spacing, select double for the line

spacing, and set the After to 0 pt.

2. Do not underline, bold, or italicize the words.


3. Center the words on the page.

Formatting Citations on the Page


1. The citations should be left
aligned and double spaced on the
page. To left align, click the
button highlighted in the
diagram
2. All lines after the first in each citation should be
indented half an inch. The easiest way to do this is to
have Word do it for you.

3. Go back to the Paragraph section and click on the symbol


in the corner to open the menu.
4. In the menu under the Indent section, choose Hanging
from the Special Indent dropdown box. The indent should
be set to .5

5. Citations should be arranged in alphabetical order


according to the first word in the citation. Properly
formatted, your page should look something like this:

6. Check to make sure that all PROPER NOUNS (names, city,


companies, book titles, etc.) are capitalized
appropriately!
7. Word will get all up in arms about you putting periods at

the ends of units that are not sentences (not the green
squigglies seen above), but just ignore that.
